Q: Hi Peter and the 5i Team,

John Heinzl on June 20 rated EMP.A as a “star” in his Stars and Dogs column in the Globe & Mail. We recently purchased a smallish amount in Empire EMP.A to round out our Consumer Defensive holdings which include COST, DOL, XST, and L.

As far as Metro MRU is concerned, it’s held in XST which also contains some of the other smaller firms in the sector.

Do you believe that the troubled takeover of Safeway by Empire several years ago is now a ‘thing of the past’, making Empire a reasonable investment, given its successful takeover of Farm Boy as well as its 51% share of Longos? Both Farm Boy and Longos are quite busy in our Oakville location.

Thanks as always for your insight. Happy Canada Day to all at 5i as well as my fellow 5i members!

Q: Subject: Investment Advice Request for US RRSP Holdings

Good afternoon,

I have some US dollars available for investment, and I currently hold the following four stocks in my US RRSP.

Could you please advise which of these you would consider the most attractive investment opportunity at this time?

I'm also open to any other recommendations you believe are worth considering.

Thank you in advance for your insights,

Martin

Q: Last November, CASY was listed as a favourite Consumer Defensive along with COST and WMT. In May of this year, CASY was on the 'quite comfortable to own list'. Considering it did very well yesterday, would a purchase now be considered buying a quality name and buying into positive momentum? How does 5i's feel about the company now and why? As a COST owner, I am quite interested in your thoughts on this name. With thanks.

Q: Similar to my last question, but looking to the US, I am interested in having a group of companies that are great companies and want to develop a grouping of these -whether they have a dividend or not, as part of my portfolio. Companies that have a competitive advantage, great leadership, quality assets, not too high debt and continue to execute with continuous improvement. Could you give me what you consider to be the best Great US Companies for each sector or industry. Thank you.

Q: Hi - I'm trying to get a sense as to how much these companies have the trade/tariff war issues priced in. I know it's a short term question here, but would you wait to buy these great companies given the economic uncertainty? My sense is purely anecdotal, but my gut tells me that people are pulling back on extra spending....so while COST and WMT benefit from people looking for low prices, they may also avoid the spending on extras. Thoughts? In other words, would you expect negative earnings revisions over next few months on these companies? Even if trade war averted (unlikely), they still may miss this quarter as people are already tightening their belts.

Q: In January you suggested a portfolio for 2025 could look like the one noted below. I’m 90% invested. position size is a high of 5% (full position) and 2.5% (half position) depending on my perception of size/risk. Based on the current climate, I lowered Nvidia is down to 3.5% - anything you would modify today? 5i - a mix of quality Cdn. and US stocks, with a lean to growth: GOOG, NVDA, VRT, CLBT, AXON, JPM, RTX, CRM, NBIS, ISRG, BKNG. CSU, TRI, BN, WSP, WELL, GLXY, CLS, ENB, TD, SLF, V, BAM, COST and CRWD. Calling out I also have a 4% position in Amazon and 2% Shopify.
