Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Back in September 2024, I had asked whether it might be a good idea to rotate from ENB to a producer like CNQ/CVE. 5i's response as the time was that it was not a fan of "fixing' things that are not broken".

This has so far been good call because ENB has faired well while the producers are hitting new lows.

My question is: at what point does the risk/reward become such that rotating into the producers make sense?

Q: I currently own ENB (full position), SU and WMB in my RRIF. I am thinking I would like to increase my dividend income to help meet my annual withdrawal. I am trying to decide whether to sell WMB and buy more SU (more dividend income); sell WMB and replace it with CNQ (dividend bump and retain diversification) or stay the course and sell some shares if needed. I would appreciate your opinion which could include an option I have not considered.

On a different note, we had the misfortune of having our home broken into in Toronto. During the course of the investigation the officer suggested we download the images captured by our door alarm using their Axon app. I took the opportunity to ask the officer about Axon which I own (get a little intel to turn my lemon experience into lemonade maybe!). He said the officers love the software and they were looking forward to getting the upgraded Taser within the next few months. So it was nice to get that positive news.

Appreciate your insight.

Q: I am an income investor looking for stability with some growth and want to invest in pipelines. I would prefer an ETF like PPLN but the cost is too high with an MER of 0.74 and TER 0.11. If you could only invest in 3 of the above 5 companies, which would you choose? Can you rank the above 5 pipeline companies, from highest growth potential to lowest, over the next 3 years.
Thanks!

Q: I would like 3-4 ideas for investment to be held in cash account. I don't need the money unless an emergency and was thinking of parking in a few solid pref shares perhaps to pick up a decent tax efficient yield but open to alternatives.

Q: I am puzzled as to why the pipeline stocks have been dropping substantially over the last few days. I would have expected these companies to hold up quite well as they are basically a toll road for oil and gas with a good dividend. I considered pipeline stocks as a good defensive holding. What am I missing?

Q: These seem to be your favourites in the O&G sector. Which would you buy at this point?

If they not your top two, please add your recommended company or ETF.

Thanks!

Q: Perhaps am looking for unicorns. I have some money to deploy and I am looking for companies that have the balance sheet to ride out the current situation whether it lasts another two months or >12 months. My basic criteria were those potentially undervalued, dividend over 3%, div growth of at least 5% and a decent payout ratio. Any suggestions appreciated, thanks for your help.

Q: Hi group the above stocks i sold 1/2 of my folio about 3 months ago/ yes at a tidy profit. My question is I am 75 years old and have $100,000 to reinvest (20% of my total portfolio)...(dry power) i do not need any cash to supplement my income for at least 5 years unless the market falls of a cliff because of Trump/Tariffs. I would say I am a sleep at night investor So the question is what to do now wait or start nibbling now. These stocks make up about 70% of the total portfolio

Q: It seems the mid-stream oil and gas companies are holding up fairly well in this world of uncertainty. I would like to take positions in all, or some of these companies.

Are there any of these that you would not invest in at this time? If so, why not?

It would also be helpful if you would rank order them for me in terms of reliability of dividends and value at this time.

If you think there are other mid-streamers you like please feel free to include them.

Q: How does 5i feel about the Canadian energy sector, specifically SU, MEG, CNQ, ENB? Is the recent pullback an opportunity to add to an existing position or hold for time being?

How's the outlook for the sector in the next 5 years?
