Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: With free cash flow and/or sufficient ready liquid cash on hand and a healthy prospective new business list in the hopper, in which order would you liquidate. Obviously the weakest one being the 1st to go.

Q: Hi Team,
This is more of a general question/ observation of todays price action. On a very negative day yet again, across all major index's where it seemed almost everything is down, some of my worst performers which I thought would be down even more yet were actually positive on the day. In specific (RBLX,SHOP,SQ,TOI (almost NVDA...was positive for a while). Anyways, should we read much into this? Is this a sign that some of these beat down names may actually be flirting with bottom? Or is is just wild trading and a one off perhaps? Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

Shane.

Q: Hi Team,
I was looking for a list of some beat down, quality names in this carnage with robust potential, to hold my breath and buy some more shares for the long term. Names that have the potential to recover and continue climbing higher, once the market normalizes (whenever that may be). 4 names I was thinking of were either NVDA, SHOP, WELL or TOI. Which of these would be your top choice for the highest return potential over the next 10yr period? Do you have any other names in mind which you would prefer or the ones I listed? Thanks

Shane.

Q: Questions on Topicus:

What makes Topicus different from any other software company - i.e. what makes it more attractive relative to others?

Since it's operations are European, does it currently trade at comparable European valuations?

The economic outlook for Europe appears to be worse than North America. Is this not a concern over the short to medium term?

How do Topicus' current metrics compare to when it first traded?

If you were to choose 3 highest-conviction Canadian growth stocks with similar market cap / risk profile / management quality, would Topicus be one of them?

Q: Hello Peter,
Given your response to Topicus, is the company following the same strategy as it did for CSU? If so, given that its presence in Europe and that it trades on Venture exchange with little coverage, can you see this stock doing well in the longer term? Also, why would CSU not focus on getting the company to trade on Toronto Exchange? Lastly , Tecsys has been on the decline.. Any major reason as i thought this would be a good long term hold? Thanks

Q: I noticed an interesting thing the other day, with the CPI announcement in the US causing a sudden severe tech market downdraft. Tech stocks such as Amazon went down about 6% and have stayed there. Smaller Canadian tech stocks didn't however. I hold both Converge and Topicus and they are both trading higher than they were two or three days ago. Does this decoupling mean that smaller Canadian tech stocks may have bottomed? Ie. all of the weak shareholders have been flushed out and mostly long term holders now hold the shares?

Q: Hello Peter,
i am starting to realize, buying stocks based on previous success does not always work out as in Knights and Topicus case. However, i was wondering with current environment, is it a good idea to initiate a position in Knight with hope of good returns in future as i see little downside.. Please let me know . i am thinking of selling TOI, for Gud. Thanks

Q: I have recently redeemed some mutual funds that I have held for 20 to 30 years that will produce a significant capital gain for me in 2022. I have several stocks and an ETF that have been purchased in the past few years that are showing losses in the range of $5k to $15k. This includes TOI, U, SOXX, SQ, NVDA, MFI, MSFT, WSP and AMZN. Would you suggest selling these stocks to provide a capital loss that can be applied against my capital gain in 2022? It is my understanding that I will need to wait 30 days to repurchase shares to avoid the denial of the capital loss. If you would suggest selling these stocks and ETF, should I sell now or wait until the end of 2022? And if the stocks and ETF are sold to create a capital loss before the end of 2022, do you see some future in these investments and if so, which stocks would you suggest that I repurchase after 30 days? Thank you for your insights.

Q: Hi 5i,

I have maybe a rare question for you. I have done quite well with my stock selections (much thanks to you for many of the wise choices) and are sitting on a pool of Capitol Gains. Now, my wife and I are entering the phase of our life where we can make some significant "tax-friendly" charitable donations. Always keeping in mind, saving enough for the rest of our days. Our question is: If you had to sell from the list I provided, and thinking of holding the remainder at least another 10 years, which would you chose to sell a portion of ? Perhaps the top 3, in order of choice ? Thanks so much.
