Q: Perhaps I wasn't crystal clear in my earlier question on these 3 - Canadian companies with US operations could be a target under the IRS section 891 to double taxes paid on their US operations. What Canadian companies might be affected by 891 in retaliation for our Digital Services Tax to pay more US tax?

Q: Your parents give you $100k CAD and $100k USD to invest on behalf of your family for the next 5 years. They instruct you to invest $20k in five Cdn stocks and $20k in five U.S. stocks to hold over the duration. Considering current valuations, the fact this is your family's money, and the objective of maximizing total return over the period, what are your 10 picks?

Q: Greetings 5i Team,
I hold these securities in a TFSA and am looking to add a new position. At the same time, I will be trimming some of these as they have done very well.
Could you make a few suggestions for a new addition? Growth is the objective and diversification need not be overly considered (I am well diversified within other accounts).
Thank you for providing this great service.

Q: Good morning,

I recently became aware that SOBO's dividends can be paid in US$.

Q1. Do you consider it a good idea to journal SOBO.CA holdings in a CDN$ Non Registered account to a US$ Non Registered account so that US$ can be generated in a similar manner as journaling BN shares from my CND$ Non Registered account to my US$ Non Registered account for the purpose of generating US$.

Q2. Do you see any negative aspect or tax implication with this strategy?

Thank you for your thoughts on this and I'll await your response.

Francesco

Q: I am interested in the divergence in performance between BN and its associated companies including BEP.UN. I own BEP.UN and BIP.UN both of which have a history of strongly outperforming BN. More recently they have fallen off while BN has fluorished. Can you comment and what would be your advice on switching some holdings into BN?
Thanks

Q: Peter, is there a list of TSX listed companies that get a majority of their earnings from US operations ? With US protectionism and aggression likely to increase is it a sound strategy to focus on these companies with the $Cdn portion of a equity retirement portfolio ? Thank you.

Q: BN got a nice bump today, about 2.6%, and the only news I could find was about their sale of some Transalta shares. Is that the reason for the jump in the share price? Do you know how much profit BN made on the sale of those shares? Do you have an idea what they plan to do with the funds? Or is there some other reason the stock jumped?

Q: Hi 5i

Please as many questions as needed.

I am heavily invested in stocks and want to raise cash, putting more money into bonds. I have about 10% in Canadian oil and gas, 5% gold stocks, and about 13% in uranium stocks. I am going to hold my gold and uranium.

What allocation would you suggest for a retiree in terms of portfolio holdings of gas and oil?

I am concerned about the possible coming tarriffs and the effect on the Canadian ecomomy. Most of my holdings are Canadian. A lot of these are in dividend stocks. I have held them through the past few years but I do need to increase the allocation to conservative investments. I plan to reduce most by about 20% or consider outright sells. I currently prefer to reduce downside risk than worry about the upside.

Can you help me decide from the viewpoint of possible tarriffs and effect on the Canadian economy which are at risk the most. Could you class these as hold, reduce or sell. I will hold all my U.S. stocks which are about 15% of my portfolio and haven't listed those here.

Thank you for your very helpful advice.

Q: I hold BAM, BIP.UN, BIPC, BEP.UN, BEPC and BN in a non registered account. For September and December dividend payments, I noticed that a withholding tax was applied to BIP.UN. For tax purposes, would any of the 6 stocks listed be better off in a registered account?
