Q: Looking for steady type income stream. One that has some momentum preferably. Most valuations seem similar. Which might you prefer in the Royalty type area of consumer cyclicals?

Q: Hello, This is not a question about stocks but more towards interest rate and the effect on markets. How can the US un-employment rate still be around the 5% when we hear of mass layoffs everyday from major companies? It would seem that the 5% is skewed so as to give reason for the fed to keep raising rates which in turn would seem to affect the markets.

Q: I am a retired income investor. I own a lot of the various Brookfield companies. I have held BGI.un for quite some time and, unlike the Brookfied companies, I am well under water. It is very thinly traded. I have no problems keeping BGI because it fits my need for dividends but I am wondering if it is dead money and will keep slipping. Can I have your opinionon its future

Does adding all the debt for the "go private" not affect the security of the Pref?

Will Cannacord, the company, eventually end up with the debt or will the buy-out shareholders be responsible for the debt?

Q: I have a bit of cash on the sidelines that I'd like to deploy in a money market fund/cash proxy etf product to earn a bit of interest on. Do you have any suggested ETFs for this purpose in this market?

Q: I use my TFSA to buy and hold low-debt, cash flow positive, technology companies with good long-term growth prospects. My TFSA holdings (ENGH, OTEX, SYZ, TCS, AIF, REAL and AT, ranked by weight) total about 8% of my overall portfolio. My holdings in AT and REAL have fallen to about 1% of my overall portfolio, because of their poor performance, versus 2.5% average holding for each stock in the overall portfolio. I am considering the following options:

1. Keep both AT and REAL for a long term (10+ year) hold (i.e. do nothing)
2. Sell one and consolidate into the other for a long term hold (but which one to keep?)
3. Sell both and consolidate into my other TFSA holdings (which one(s)?)

I would welcome your thoughts with respect to each option, given there is no tax loss selling benefit in a TFSA. Thanks!

A great question by Rodney today (Jan 11) on Tech sector "rolling over" and comparing it to the current status in O&G sector. I really appreciated your measured and thoughtful response.

This is a quick follow up question to your answer to Rodney's question:

I "get" the 80$ markin XLE as an indicator to monitor. Makes sense.

But what other sectors would like XLE to be compared to? XMA or XLI or XGD.....not sure if you meant ALL the 11 sectors in S&P or some specific sectors that are comparable to O&G.

Q: Is there some way to score-board enhanced-yield Canadian bank ETFs/funds that assigns more weight to the factors that make more of a difference? Yes, fees add up, but even over the long term it's hard to see how basis-point fee differences could outweigh percentage-point yield differences. And won't either of these factors be outweighed by distribution tax treatment and, especially, by central bank rate-pivoting?

Further, in side-by-side comparisons, 5i often prefers larger ETFs (recently, for example, when comparing CBNK vs BANK.) But given large-cap banks' similar value-propositions and tendency toward mean-reversion, why should higher AUM matter (other than w/rt second-order effects like trading liquidity)? Put another way: what, if anything, could a new entrant to this sector do to make themselves attractive to 5i?

Please add to the supplied symbol list if other names provide more instructive comparisons.

Q: I'm looking at my legacy pile of preferred shares of which I have never been fond and wondering if this isn't a good time to sell and invest in a bond ETF such as XHY. I know you have expressed ambivalence about prefs but have also said in better times the class can do better. However, yields are roughly comparable, I can use the loses and invest the proceeds in XHY or a different bond fund which you might suggest, keeping the investment on the fixed income side of the page, Many thanks. al

In general most of the Cdn banks have turned up lately, some more so than others, but it is the TD that I am most curious about. On Jan 3rd and 4th, there appeared to be very large buying volume, yet by the 5th it started to trend downwards, out of sync to the others. Was there a news item on TD that I've missed? As the Big Six tend to move in the same direction, this caught my attention. So I'm wondering if there is a reason and is it something to be concerned about?
