Q: Hello,
I’m 32 and currently in the early stages of my investing journey with a long time horizon and medium-high risk tolerance.
My question is about “safe” dividend stocks set as DRIPs. At this point is it worth holding onto equities such as Enbridge, Bell, and Algonquin that are typically held for income or should I focus more on high growth given my 20+ year time horizon? I currently hold around 20 stocks and these stocks comprise 15% of my portfolio. They are also the only stocks I hold in the energy, utilities and telecom sector.

Q: I noticed that AQN is issuing units consisting of shares and notes yielding 7.75% to 2026. Do you have any thoughts about this investment?

Q: Hi Folks,
I currently own the following in my RRSP account (weightings in brackets ) - PG (4%), TD (13.5%), BNS (10%), MFC (3%), ABBV (6.5%), PFE (12%), BCE (14%), T (14.5%), AQN (6.5%), BIP.UN (6%), and ENB (6.5%).
I want to reduce my exposure to TD, BNS, BCE, T and PFE to bring them in line with the others - can you suggest some names that will complement the portfolio, keeping in mind I am looking for Income with some growth - long term hold.

Q: My question is in regards to your information about US$ Dividends. I contacted Questrade where I have an account and they were pretty clear that if I have these stocks with the TSX, then they get paid in CA$. Here is what they said:

"I will like to let you know that we are not exchanging your dividend. We are only depositing the currency we received into your account. And I have double checked with our team and they confirm we can't change the currency of the dividend or choose them.
I am sorry you will need to contact investor relation of the company to help you with this. Please note we only deposit as what we receive from the company."

This is quite different from what the article on your home page says. Am I misunderstanding? Could you please explain. Thanks so much!

I would like your view on the following. Would you prefer to buy a basket of power utilities (FTS/H/AQN etc) to create a hybrid ETF for sector exposure? (if so, can you provide a list of your favorites?) Or is it worth the mer to buy an ETF that has most of them embedded within? In which case, which ETF would you recommend?

Q: I am drastically under invested in utilities. I presently hold the following - each is under a 1% weighting - AQN, ACO, BIPC, BEPC, BEP.UN, CU, and Fortis. Which would you sell? Which would you add to? All are in corporate non reg acct. Also want to increase my US and International exposure. Is there a reason not to do it in this sector?

Q: Hello Peter,

We are seeking advice on how to play the infastructure game now that Biden confirmed on Sunday that it is a stand-alone deal. We are light on Steel, Industrials, Manufacturing, Aerospace, Transportation, Materials, and 5G. We have some green energy with BEP.UN & AQN. We will reshuffle the deck by reducing Tech stocks to accommodate the shift.

Can you rank the following stocks in the categories 1st to last and add any other stocks that may be a better choice than those listed
Steel: RS, NUE, SCHN
Industrials: DD, HON (+ any other suggestions)
Aerospace: LMT, BA
Transportation: WSP, TFII, UNP, CNR, CP (+ any other suggestions)

I'm starting to think about tax loss harvesting. I have losses of 15% & 20% respectively in AQN & BEP.UN (only held since early 2021).
Would you consider this short holding period too short for meaningful tax loss harvesting (i.e. being too focused on short-term movements)?
I intend to add these two (or similar) back after the 30-day period, they are part of my longer-term plan.
Can you suggest one or two replacements for the interim (or longer?). Portfolio is appropriately diversified and already includes FTS. H? EMA? BLX?

Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp. ("AQN" or the "Company") (TSX: AQN) (NYSE: AQN) today announced that it plans to conduct an underwritten marketed public offering of equity units (the "Equity Units") in an expected aggregate stated amount of $900 million (the "Offering"), subject to market conditions and other factors.

Each Equity Unit will be issued in a stated amount of $50 and will initially consist of a contract to purchase common shares in the capital of the Company ("Common Shares") and a 1/20, or 5%, undivided beneficial ownership interest in $1,000 principal amount of the Company's remarketable senior notes expected to be due June 15, 2026. Pursuant to the purchase contracts, holders will be required to purchase Common Shares on June 15, 2024. The Company intends to list the Equity Units (that are in the form of "corporate units") on the New York Stock Exchange and expects trading to commence within 30 days of the date of initial issuance (subject to listing approval).

My daughter (still in school for another 3 years) has L, REAL, AQN, BAM-A, SLF, TIXT, BYD on a tfsa account and has some cash to add to one of this positions.
Also has ATD-B and MG in a cash account and wants to add another position.
Please suggest adding to current TFSA choices and a new idea for cash account. 3 year horizon.
