Q: Eric Nuttall has an interesting column in the Financial Post today saying investing in oil and gas right now is a 'generational opportunity', that Canadian oil and as are hugely undervalued and could double in a year. What do you think of increasing oil and gas holdings? How much do you think would be appropriate right now and do you still think Suncor is the way to go? I notice you have only a very small 1% holding in the balanced portfolio.

Q: Hello,
You recently stated that you were averaging down to pick up some more SU. I went in to read your report on it as I currently only have ENG. However, there doesn't appear to be one. Is that correct? There's been a lot of recent chatter about rising natural gas prices and with the recent increases in oil prices, I'm assuming your favourites currently are ENG and SU. Thank you.

Q: Would like to create a 10-15 stock portfolio out the securities listed above, to meet my retirement income and growth needs, for a long term hold.
CPD is my current, imperfect proxy for the fixed income portion of my portfolio.
CVE, CNQ, SU would be the only opportunistic (and highly correlated) purchases, to take advantage of the current low valuations for the petroleum industry. These would be sold if the oil & gas market's prospects change.
Please rank all the securities on the basis of return potential over 2-3 years as the primary criteria,
Please eliminate any stock which does not have adequate balance sheet strength, from the lineup.
Please add to the lineup all securites that would facilitate the creation of a defensible, well-diversified, long term portfolio - especially if it is in a sector that I have overlooked.

Thank you for your expertise, and willingness to help me sleep a bit more soundly.

Q: Given the under-investment in oil exploration over the past several years, I am seeking an investment in an oil name with strong reserves to complement my SU holding. Can you suggest a couple options with sustainable supply (low depletion) over the medium term to capitalize on the anticipated price rally needed to spur new investment in supply. Thank you.

Q: Time to deploy a small amount of cash in an un-registered account. My 2 smallest holdings are SU and MAL. I am hesitant to jump back into oil and gas as the glory days are likely behind them. SU valuation is attractive but long term I just dont see the good times ahead. MAL I've owned forever and glad to see you add coverage and into the income portfolio. It has been beat up a bit and makes it attractive but worried about a slow airline recovery hampering revenues. Coin toss or do you have a preference for next 3-5 years. Not really enough cash to bother with a 50-50.

Q: Assuming a deflationary scenario and a continuing low interest rate environment for the next 18-24 months or so, what are your top five sectors and the top three picks within those sectors.
Many thanks for your most helpful advice.

Q: ENERGY:
I sold most of my energy holdings a while ago, the last one being SU: Suncor just before the price of oil started to increase.
I now only hold ENB: Enbridge at 2.4% of overall RRIF portfolios.

Is it a bit too late to think about increasing my holdings in this sector?

I'm a buy and hold investor and rarely seem to act in time to take advantage of sectors coming in to and going out of favour. Maybe you could consider giving we laggards a heads up when you start to notice that this "in and out of favour" starts to happen?

Thanks for your ideas.

Q: I have heard we can expect to pay more to fill up at the pumps. Are you more bullish on oil or gasoline? If you are more bullish on gas oriented companies, what companies would you recommend?

Q: I am looking to increase my energy exposure, and I am debating between a more senior producer, such as Suncor, or looking for greater torque to oil prices, such as Tamarack or Athabasca. I was wondering about your thoughts on the matter, including whether you feel that energy producers have more runway, or if the energy sector has reached something closer to full value. This would be a smaller position, no more than 2% of portfolio, so I can afford to take on some risk for the opportunity for growth. Thanks again, and I look forward to reading your thoughts.

Q: I have stayed away from energy, except for ENB and TC, which are pipelines.
Do you think there is more upside in the O & G stocks. If so what would you suggest?
Also the same goes for basic materials. I am not interested in gold. What would be your picks for basic materials.
Thanks for your service, I would be lost without it.
