Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Looking to open a position in one of the 2 listed companies or others if you have any to recommend. Long term investor with 0 exposure to the real estate sector in the portfolio yet.

Colliers growth projections and better valuation along with positive analysts ratings make it more attractive on the surface. However, I know that you have First Service in the growth portfolio, is there something that I'm missing as to why I should choose FSV before CIGI? Could you please give a breakdown between the two and the reasoning behind choosing one over the other? Also open to any other real estate sector stocks that would be a good add.

Thanks again!

Q: Hello Peter,
With the recent announcement of the tax bill in the US where the withholding tax could increase to 50 percent from the current 15 percent, is this only for non registered and TFSA accounts? I am assuming the RRSPs are exempt as there is currently no withholding tax on RRSPs from US domiciled companies.. Thanks for your service.

Q: You recently answered a question about HDIV and ETSX. I currently own ETSX and have been happy with the income and growth it has generated. I am thinking of adding HDIV or EIT.UN.
Could I get your comments on EIT.UN as a comparison to the other 2 funds?
I am a retiree looking primarily for steady income with some growth.

Q: Hi looking at two small caps at the moment. What are your thoughts on the news of the conclusion of the strategic review for NEO and news put out today on GIP's sale of its water, waste and recycling facilities and lead equity partner agreement for the Future Energy Park? thanks

Q: My question is on portfolio management, trimming rather than selling.

I'm hearing and feeling that some sectors and companies, or even countries like the US market, are a bit expensive, ahead of their skis, and might well be trimmed. I have done so for gold, for example.

I would like your opinion. Even if you don't agree with the premise, what areas would you trim on that basis.

Lastly, can you suggest some areas that do not fit that premise and are under-valued. I think this of oil and gas, for example.

I'd be grateful for a detailed answer on this and would be happy to spend a few points for it, as you see fit.

Thanks, as always, for your wisdom.

Q: I listened to a CIBC webcast today outlining the fact international equities were cheaper then US and possibly Canadian equities based on P/E ratios and are expected to outperform US and possibly Canadian equities in the near term. Interesting sectors discussed were international infrastructure companies, defense, e-commerce and semi-conductors. Could you provide a few Canadian ETF's that would provide exposure to these themes and list you favourite?
Thanks
Jeff

Q: CQLI Here is one I can not find much information that I am hoping you can shed some light on. The chart look good and the yield is over 20%. Looking for niche areas for a mid term places to place some cash with good returns until the clouds clear a bit.

Q: How serious do you feel the aggregate global debt situation is? I have read that the total is now well over $300 trillion USD. Government and consumer spending seems somewhat out of control in much of the world. Let's put it this way -if the Earth was part of an interplanetary federation, would the aliens' financial authorities think we are heading towards bankruptcy?
