Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Hi 5i Team - I hold the above stocks in three small U.S. accounts. I plan to keep NVDA, QCOM, AMZN, GOOG. My holdings in the other six are minimal due to the general sell-off over the past year: CRWD, UCTT, U, APPS, ROKU, UPST. I would like to combine these 6 into two, three at the maximum. Could you suggest which two or three should be kept. Or might it be best to sell all six and start over with a couple of different ones. My investment focus is growth with a three year timeline. Since it's the end of the week the answer can wait until sometime next week.
Thanks.

Q: Hi 5i:
I've been away for a while and not keeping up with Questions, so this may already have been asked and answered. if so, please provide a link to the answer.
I'm hoping you could advise what sectors you think will reverse the current trend and begin to appreciate in value more quickly than others and, also, if you could identify three or so names you would expect to 'lead the charge' in each of those sectors.
If time and space permit, any commentary you might have regarding each identified sector and/or name would be appreciated. Thanks!
Peter

Q: I own these stocks as part of my technology sector. Do you see any overlap in any of these names? Particularly between SHOP, LSPD and NVEI, or are they different enough to own all? Also if you were to choose to high grade 1-2 names, what would you choose if any? Thanks!

Q: Hi team,
I have been a long term holder of ADW and overall with dividend and trimming at prior highs will come out just above par with this holding, which is not desired for multi year, but a nice learning experience for me.
I am thinking of selling and splitting between tc energy, sun life and alphabet. The first two for greater yield play, and all three on the belief that on positive macro news all will perform better relative to ADW (small cap, debt level, your B rating, consumer lag on discretionary).

Thanks for your thoughts.

Q: Hello, thinking of selling these stocks for tax loss reasons (10-15%). Although one would think a very possible recession with the related decrease in earnings is already baked in share prices, I am afraid it is not entirely so. I intent to buy these stocks back in a month, hopefully with a lower SP. Is the tradeoff between tax loss and the risk of share prices jumping much higher worth it? Thanks

Q: Understanding that we are currently seeing significant negative sentiment and volatility, can you please rank your current top Cdn and U.S. quality-name buying opportunity candidates that will reward patient investors with 3-5 year time horizons?

Q: I have a significant amount of cash to invest. I would like to allocate to some very high-quality stocks across various industries that can be bought and held for a long period of time so they can compound. If you could pick 10 companies that meet this criteria, what would they be? I was thinking about BAM, MSFT, V, COST, CP, UNH, HD, JNJ, GOOG, BRK.b but am open to suggestions or changes to this list. No banks or energy please.

Q: Hi Peter and staff,

On Sep. 13 I asked about possible new purchases, and one of the recommendations was UPST. So I'm looking at the chart and it looks like it's on a free fall for the last year, although it has stabilized recently.
I went back and checked on past Q&A and your view was not positive for UPST. You recommended AFRM over UPST and you mentioned that the fundamentals and potential have deteriorated.
I also checked and it appears that right now there are 2 Buys, 6 Holds and 1 underperform.
Just wondering what new information you have that would make this a buy.

As always thank you for your advice.

Joe

Q: Hi,
In your recent blog on 5 investing principles, you say it is important to distinguish between permanent and temporary market losses. However, you do not say how to do that. DOCU, PTON and NFLX all did great in the pandemic. All are floundering now. So, do you view the market losses in DOCU, PTON and NFLX as permanent or temporary and why?
Thanks.

Q: As part of a balanced portfolio, we have the following 3 equities that I would like to add to, for some additional tilt towards growth:
SHOP at 1.6% of portfolio (down 46%),
GOOG-NE @ 2.5% of portfolio (down 12%),
NVDA at 3% of portfolio (up 11%).
What portfolio % would you feel is reasonable for each for a balanced but leaning to growth approach ? Would you purchase all at this time or divide the purchases into 2 or 3 tranches over the next # (?) of months ?
Many thanks, as always.
