Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Many years ago I heard Peter say on BNN that one of the best indicators that a stock will outperform the index is when a company initiates a dividend for the first time. Are there any good quality Canadian growth companies that currently do not pay a dividend that you feel are reasonable candidates to start paying a dividend in the next 12 - 18 months?

On the same topic, generally speaking, what would be some of your favourite small to mid cap Canadian growth stocks that do not pay a dividend? Say under a $10B market cap.

Q: 5i has given our family some very good investment ideas. Among the good ones that have benefitted our accounts lately are LMN and HPS.A. Thank you for these. Using your crystal ball what would be your best suggestion for a couple of other similar stocks that might replicate these growth stories over the next year. Thank you.

Q: Looking at Canadian technology stocks. I'm going to assume you figure CSU and SHOP are the mainstays here, so I would like to know how you would rate the following 10 other Cdn technology stocks on a scale of 1-10, for a long term hold, with 10 being a stock you would absolutely want to have in a portfolio and 1 being something of no interest at all. CLS, CTS, DCBO, DSG, GIB.A, KXS, NVEI, OTEX, TCS, VHI. I have included very small company VHI because their recent Q3 looked quite good to me. Also, if there are 1 or 2 that look like very compelling buys at this time, could you indicate which ones please. Thanks.

Q: I'm late to the party with TCS, CTS and SYZ. I don't own any of them and wonder if they still have "legs" or have they had their runs. Looking for other small Canadian Tech you find interesting.

Q: Thx for the heads up on CLS in early May. Looking at insider buying by CEOs and CFOs do you see anything of interest at present? Anything of interest from the growth porfolio with significant insider buying?

Thx

Q: Retired investor looking to reduce bank holdings. Currently have ~1/2 positions in TD and BAC and full positions in NA and RY. I would appreciate your input. Could you rank, giving rationale, ATS, CLS, ABT, HST, LEN, for upside potential? Would you recommend starting 1/2 positions (or easing into) any of them at this time? Please take credits as you see fit. Thanks.

Q: Let's say ONEX's final wish is to sell its shares of Celestica in 2023, what could be the target price if we compare with evaluations and financial statements of Benchmark and Sanmina? I understand it is a wide question, I rely on you to choose the best metrics.
Tks

Q: I was just wondering if you could clarify what the 'blackout' rules are for company insiders prior to an earnings report. I have seen this pattern before when a company reports decent earnings, the stock gaps up but sells off on heavy volume. To me, that suggests that some holders were waiting to 'sell the news' on a day that would have heavy volume/liquidity. In your experience, could that be company insiders finally able to sell their stock because they are not allowed to do it prior to earnings? CLS this week is a good example, because usually it is a very low volume trader. Thanks!
