Q: How can I make XTR, CDZ, IGRO, CLF & VAB tax efficient? Which should be held in registered accounts and which in non registered accounts and why?

Q: I am retired and have gone with a strategy of owing Canadian Dividend Aristocrat stocks in my unregistered account and Canadian ETFs in my TFSA. My RRSP and LIRAs holds US ad International ETFs such as VYM. I would appreciate you opinion on this strategy and can you make a recommendation for the best ETF for my TFSA.

Q: Hi, I currently have $11,500 to add to my TFSA with a long term horizon. I currently hold CNR (2.53%), NTR (2.88%), PLC (5.04%) PPL (2.98%), TD (4.21%), V (4.71), WCN (6.15%), XLV (3.31%) MAW 104 (25.11%). I am wondering if I should add to the current companies or might you have any other suggestions?

I have held CDZ in 2 accounts almost forever. I even added to them in Jan 2017.
It shows a 3 % gain after all this time.
Does that seem right ?

Q: Hello 5i, I currently own the BMO Monthly Income Fund (25% of porfolio) and some xtr(2%). I wish to liquidate the fund and get another etf or 2 to replace it and am considering the above dividend etfs. I would like the best of both worlds high yield/low fees and some growth with low volatility Which of the 4 would you consider adding to my xtr etf and why? Should I also increase my xtr holding. I have some GIC and am trying to be on the conservative side with this account but do hold some reits and utility etfs.

I like the tax favoured Canadian dividends and have blended ZLB, ZWC and ZDV for that purpose. There is a lot out there and would like your suggestions for long term long term dividend generation. I've not been impressed with CDZ's performance of late. I see that you keep recommending it even though their fees are higher due to better diversification. I believe they've been hurt recently by one large holding that went south, AGF I think. I'm puzzled by all this so what advice do you have? Is there alternative in this segment for a long term hold?

I am not very bullish on the Canadian economy considering the provincial and federal politics and lack of leadership in regards to the Energy and now Agricultural Industry.
So I am thinking of splitting my portfolio up into 3 categories, Growth Stocks, Dividend Paying Stocks and ETF's for global and sector diversification. ZLU & ZWH for US low volatility and Dividend, CDZ for Canadian Dividend and VGRO & XWD for global diversification and growth. Your thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

I began building an Investment Account with the ETF's approx 10% weight each. I added CGX(for Dividend) and a GIC when I was unsure of what to do.
I realize the overlap with XDV;XIU;CDZ; and the Royal Dividend Mutual Fund. What do you recommend I do with the overlap? Diversification? I would like to begin to add individual stocks. Long term horizon. Have RRSP and maxed TFSA.

Q: Hi 5i,

A portfolio construction question. I've selected a mix of XTR (36%), XSB (7%), CDZ (17%), XAW (19%), and then a mix of laddered GIC options (17%) and a small cash holding (4%). This is for a family member's portfolio, retired, needing income, security, and modest growth (in that order).

This ends with an allocation of approx. 55% equities and 45% fixed income/cash, and 69% Canada, 22% USA, and 9% Global.

This mix also generates distributions/dividends almost dead on 4%/year, so following the 4% withdrawal rule more or less allows for not needing to sell anything to cover cash flow needs.

Wondering if you could comment on the ETF selections and overall structure with the understanding of course that its always a highly personal decision. More just want to know if you have better ETF or security selections for this scenario...

I have 817k in a LIRA to invest. This is a portion of my retirement money that I will rely on for income. I still however would like some growth too. I was thinking 50% in VFV and the balance in a high yield dividend paying etf. Your thoughts and could you please recommend a high yield dividend paying etf. Thanks for your amazing insight!
