Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Good morning. I am looking to invest ~ 2% weight into the Brookfield "space". I am a recently retired, relatively conservative, investor focused more on income than growth right now, and am targeting an annual minimum of 3-7% dividend growth rate.

Of all the Brookfield companies, if you had to choose one in the above context, which one would it be?

Thanks as always.

Trevor

Q: Hi Folks,
I am finally breaking even with BNS. I am thinking of selling it and with the proceeds I will top up RY. That will leave me with RY and TD as my bank holdings with a 15% weighing. With the remaining monies I am thinking of adding one of SLF, MFC or BAM. May I have your opinion as to which one you would recommend. This will be for my RRSP account which is fairly diversified.
Thanks

Q: Can i have your perspective on the relative merits ( payoff) of private wealth companies like Blackstone, Carlyle Group as opposed to banks in either Canada or the USA such as a BNS or JPM , for example. ie would you expect better performance from the private wealth management or banks.

Thanks

Q: These 3 names get a lot of very positive comments from investment mangers, portfolio managers, etc. 5i included. But unless I am missing something I just do not get it. Take BN , for example.which is touted as a growth stock, yet is about the same price as it was about 4 years ago. Not much growth there. BIP..un is the same price as it was around 5 years ago. So many positive comments. Yet the moment stocks see a set back as we have just had, these stocks get hit hard even though most money mangers ‘love, the companies. There has to be rationale for this disconnect, but it escapes me.

Q: I purchased BCE awhile back for its very good dividend and some modest growth, thinking it was more “bond” like.
Now with the recent news I am not so sure this is the case. I am overweight in it and wondering what to do with it, whether to keep it and collect the dividend, or if it would be better to sell it or at least some of it.
I could use the loss to offset some of my gains I guess, but I am unsure what is the best move. I don’t need the money, so would probably reinvest the money in another stock.
I am asking for your advice on this investment.
Thanks so much for your past service, it has always been most helpful.

Q: I recently retired and looking to place some of my savings into the market with a 5 year horizon at which time I will re-evaluate. Will tolerate a moderate to light risk. Could you please recommend 3 or 4 stocks or etf’s for my TFSA and 5-6 stocks for growth. Appreciate all your efforts. Thank you. Brian

Q: Hi. I have an RESP for three grandkids, ages 5, 7 and 9. Current holdings that I'm underwater on are: AEM, BCE, BN, NTR and TVE along with these: ARX, BAM, CSU, ENB, RY, TD and TOU. I'd appreciate your overall comments on account re sector allocation and any obvious sells. As well, I'd like suggestions on how to deploy $7000 cash. Thx.

Q: Hi,

Thank you for answering Scott's question today (Jan 30, 2024) and choosing BIPC. His question didn't include all the components of BN behemoth. I know your favorite is BN for growth and BAM for dividends. Can you rank order others, especially BEPC/BIP? To one of earlier questions about energy stocks you chose BEPC. I understand the rationale there. If you were to ignore the energy sector where would BEPC stand?
Many thanks.

Q: Hello Peter and 5i team,
My TFSA contains the aforementioned stocks in roughly even percentages except for nominal investments in Park Lawn and DRX. I would like to make my annual contribution to one or some of these companies and would like to know what your order of preference would be for buys/adds at this time. Please also include Celestica in your considerations.
Also, are there any companies in this list that you would consider undervalued at this time?
Thank you.

Q: Hi this is a question about David’s reply to George’s question about how to achieve an effective withdrawal plan for your retirement portfolio. Would you list 6 or 7 high quality dividend paying stocks to include in your RRIF portfolio. And David if you want to consider taking your expertise on this subject to the forum, myself and others would appreciate it
Thanks

Q: I recently transferred my employer TFSA account to my trading account, so I now manage my entire TFSA. I have many solid growth names, and have XIU and BNS as a dividend/diversification play.

I am looking for a solid set it and forget it Dividend play to DRIP, and have some share price appreciation for long term.

Would BAM or FTS be your top pick for this type of thing? Can you provide say 7 or 8 of your top picks for dividend growth, business development runway, and a higher dividend? I had considered growing XIU significantly to drip more, since its diversification almost guarantees the set it and forget side of things.

Thanks for all your recent help! I'm definitely ripping through some credits this month. ;)
