Q: Hi,
What 5 or 6 uncorrelated Canadian companies & REITS would you pick for a "HIGH YIELD" portfolio for SAFE INCOME?

Q: I have TCL.a in a tax-deferred account and show a significant loss — 50.1% below my cost. I cannot use the tax loss. I follow only US shares , and 95% of my folio is in US-listed companies. I do not follow Canadian markets at all and was therefore wondering why on earth I bought this awful entity.

I have no clue EXCEPT since I would buy Canadian shares only if suggested by 5i or if the security appeared in the 5i portfolio.

Was this company EVER in the 5i folio? (I do not check the Q & A section; too many questions contain a bewilderingly long—very long— list of symbols that make it tediously difficult to read).

On TCL.a I checked reports from RBC-DI , iTRADE, Thompson Reuters, Research Team, StockCalc, StockReports, CFRA and several others. RBC is the only analyst that does NOT hate it.

When I took a closer look at TCL.a , I find it has a horribly, outdated business model. It has done nothing for years, and share price has gone only down. No analyst seems to have a clue how this ancient business model can ever work.

What do you think of TCL.a ? It does not matter that I find it maddening, meaning please disregard my prejudices and my frustration with myself for buying, then holding, something I didn’t take time to review. I am looking for a fresh independent opinion.... a very FRESH opinion from you, AFTER it reports tomorrow (June 8).

Q: I need to increase telecom portion of my portfolio, so I am considering buying one of these four: BCE, Telus, VZ, and VOD. Can you please rate these companies at the scale of 1-10 in terms of anticipated total return and safety (I am a conservative investor) over the next 5-10 years. Please disregard tax credit and US withholding tax consideration as I am in a high tax bracket and, if needed, can free up some room in RRSP. Thanks.

Q: I have no fixed income in any accounts, and I have never traded options.

I keep hearing voices in my head—in the middle of the night— that I should have a healthy allocation to fixed income, AND that I should sell covered calls on securities I love. Problem is I do not know where to start.

How does one even buy bonds? I would appreciate:
1- User-friendly sources for identifying symbols.
2- Similarly, if you would please identify sources where a clueless person learns how to sell covered calls.
3- How to select fixed income : is it only bonds or does the term include PREFERRED SHARES?
4- *When* to buy fixed income. Is now a reasonably good time?
5- Would you buy US bonds or Canadian or both?
6- Is it not better just to buy boring steady companies that pay good growing dividends, companies that chug along "nicely" paying dividend ,without intruding into one’s thoughts at night? At least I understand equities.

5i portfolio analytics scolds me on many things but never on lack of fixed income in my accounts. This strikes me as VERY ODD. Is 5i analytics silent on this because 60-40 appears to have been trashed? Is that even true?

A search of this DB indicates only one previous question asked.
At a 6% yield, a chart that doesn't show much volatility at all, and knowing you like the company and its management, it seems to be a security that would garner much more attention. Can you run through the pros and cons of buying /owning it? The current price looks attractive (to the untrained eye). We already own shares of ECN, and did very well with it over the years.

Q: These stocks are in my portfolio and are way down from my cost. Are these worth holding, adding more or to sell and move on.

As these are in my non-registered account, I can use the capital loss to offset previous year year's gains. Could you suggest proxy for these in case I sell now for capital loss to buy them later.

Wondering your thoughts on DocuSign earnings out today. I didn't think so awful, all though I do think the market wants to see actual profitablity now and docu did not deliver..again...is that your read?
Is the 20 percent off today a hint to buy or would you wait to see if future earnings reports turn around? They are cash flow positive which is a plus.

Q: Would GUD make an "interesting" investment in the current environment?

I've noticed that it held fairly well (pretty much flat) compared with its sector (down a lot), and also large amounts of share buybacks and insider buying signaling that management is confident in the company.
