Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Good morning
On a recent post, you commented "Shareholders are still a little shocked that it even decided to go after a low margin grocery chain, so may just be a little more wary." Balancing that, you also noted the partnership with Carrefour could help Couche-Tard 'get closer' and position them to acquire the parts of Carrefour they really want. Against that backdrop, my question is,
Does 5i feel that ATD is working to strategically reposition itself given the momentum building with electric vehicles? Do you feel ATD will be able to adjust strategically to make its network of stores still attractive in future with many more electric cars on the road? Thank you.

Q: This one is for Peter, since I understand hedge funds were once your bailiwick?

I know little-to-nothing about hedge funds and how they operate, so watching these huge swings happening on the markets lately and people covering shorts (whatever that means) ... I'm very curiously concerned about the overall impact this will have on the markets? Does the common sense investor bail out of Nasdaq stocks, for instance, for the moment, until everything settles down? There is no rhyme or reason to what is happening with many stocks and it would be horrible to be caught in the crossfire just for being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

I would appreciate Peter's perspective re: how to handle the US part of the portfolio at the moment.

Thanks, as always, for your great advice!

Q: The discount to the deal price is now in excess of 5%. Is it possible Apollo could be caught up in the short squeeze and not be able to close the deal? Do you think Baker may be selling shares in panic mode? Could the regulators quash the deal OR is this just some investors deciding to take some money off the table due to the stench created by Baker and Epstein crony Leon Black?

Q:

Peter,

My questions revolves around the sites Morningstar and TMX money. I look at these types of sites who provide loads of data and am wondering about the MO. Are these types of sites set up to give you "teaser" information and then get you to subscribe or do they collect their revenue from advertisers ?

Thank you

Paul

Q: Hi,

I'm looking for an ETF that holds a small number of high quality Canadian stocks - say about 25 holdings. A yield similar to XIC or XIU would be nice but not critical.

HBF and DXG are a couple of ETF examples that I use for US and international companies. So something similar to these but holding Canadian companies. I don't mind paying a slightly higher MER for a somewhat more active portfolio management style.

Thanks,

Gord

Q: I have too much exposure to the CAD market and too less internationally.

Could you provide me with 2 etfs that have caught your attention the past 12-24 months. One which is A growth oriented etf with more risk as well as another which is a slow boring low MER etf with a 2-3% yield which less risk.

Thanks for the recommendations in advance.

Q: I would very much appreciate explaining the difference between ARK and Evolve Etf's. Are ARKs actively managed while Evolves are passively managed? Would you please choose two or three of each that have a balance between better growth and lower risk and provide good diversification.
Thanks.

Q: What do you see hapening to engh in the next 3-6 months. I sold it for a good gain in my unregistered account at the recent highs. I bought back in ( in a registered acccount) after the pullback and when I started seeing what I thought was a bottom earlier this month. However the slow decline seems to be continuing...Have I missed something driving the price down? You seem to be favouring other tech names these days which is partially why I sold it. The plan was to buy back in, havest the yield from the special and feb div and hopefully get a small price gain as well in the next few month then swicth to one of your recent more favoured tech stocks ( likely lspd). If you see no strong reason for the recent pullback I will hold ( my feeling) , if you think the decline is cause for concern ( I've missed some news or issue) I woull likely sell and move another name now.
