Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Dorothy asks:

“Do you know of a site that I can list all my stocks, the cost price, and number of shares and get the following information: gain or loss, with the percentage and the dollar amounts.“

I have used the Yahoo Finance portfolio tool for decades. It’s free and easy to use.

I also use the Globe and Mail portfolio tool, which requires a subscription to the digital newspaper but offers real time quotes and quite good portfolio analytics.

Q: I own 2500 shares (~CA$136,000) of Nutrien (non-registered account) with an unrealized capital loss of approximately $19,000. To realize this loss, I am planning to sell my position in Nutrien with aim to re-buy after 30 days. In the interim, to maintain weighting in that sector, what suggestions do you have for an economically similar security (or securities)? (My holding is currently in a US$ brokerage account, so would be easiest to switch to another US$ security, although I could journal-entry my shares into the corresponding CA$ account, and sell my NTR shares in CA$, if you suggest a CA$ security[ies].)

Q: CAR.UN seems to be struggling. I hold it in an unregistered account at a loss position. I also hold DIR.UN. Am thinking of selling CAR.UN, waiting 30 days and then re-buying or just adding the sale funds to increase DIR.UN. Don't hold any other REITs in my cash account, but have other REITs in RSP account. I am thinking that CAR.UN will need some time to recover and that it will be very slow over time. Do you agree? Would you wait longer to rebuy?
Question 2 is regarding DOCU. Would you consider it still a buy at current levels for a 5 year + hold.
Thanks for your input.

Q: More than one topic -- The Feds are forecasting GDP to decline by 42% which will be the biggest single year drop since WWII. Will the market take a hit for a period of time? I have read about SPAC (buying a company before it becomes an IPO) not listed on Globe Investor with 2 of a few names associated with it being Bill Ackman and Harry Sloan -- and SPCE (listed on Globe Investor) and would ask what is your take on what I consider new products to use for investing? I read an article of another member who had similar questions about the above-mentioned. Thank you, Dennis

Q: In order to increase my holdings in Healthcare, I bought Theratechnologies 2 years ago at $7.21 when 5i was bullish on the stock. The stock did quite well for awhile and I was very happy. It closed on Friday at $2.68 (not so happy anymore). Is this company expected to recover or should I accept my losses and sell?
