I am an income investor. One to two years to go before retirement.
My portfolio is out of balance.
Low weightings in Basic Materials, Consumer Cyclical, Consumer Defensive, Health Care, Industrials and Tech..
Also need more US and international exposure.
Please provide some income suggestions for these economic sectors in the US and Internationally.

Q: Just read another "we're all gonna die" forecast from Rosenberg along with a different analyst calling for 6% GNP growth this year. I get whiplash reading this stuff. My question is, can you suggest a consumer discretionary ETF that would catch the wave that might or might not be coming? Many thanks. I do enjoy the cooler heads at 5i.

Q: I've been looking over the large variations in valuations between this stock's ticker prices in both CDA and US. I noticed the yield between BIP:US and BIP.UN is rather tiny. Just curious, between all 4 tickers which offers the cheapest entry? If yield is included does that rearrange the order? As a separate issue could you mention the withholding tax metric as it has nothing to do with what an American calculates into a purchase of this stock?

Q: In a question asked by Keith yesterday about position size of small caps, you answered that you would consider 3% to be a reasonable full position within a well-diversified portfolio.

Could you clarify if you meant a full position at the time of purchase or that you would tend to start trimming a small-cap position once it started to exceed that level?

Q: I already own XBC, and have been looking at GRN it has moved up a bit lately. Is it a buy? Was just wondering how much difference there was in these two companies. XBC seems to be more into the hydrogen and cleaning of gases. Is GRN more into RNG equipment and installations. I know you really like XBC and was wondering whether it would be suitable to buy GRN. Or do you have another company in the same field that might be better or should I just add to my XBC.

I know you haven't been a big fan of these two companies in the past, due to some questionable management issues before they split from Patient Home Monitoring. However, Viemed shares have surged since listing on the Nasdaq (with some help from Covid) and PTQ has shown recent momentum with last week's announcement of a pending Nasdaq listing. Could you please give me your current thoughts on these two companies? Specifically, does the potential for a cross-listing gain with PTQ outweigh some of the other concerns, or would you still be wary? Thanks, Brad

Q: What Canadian bond fund would you suggest if as the fed states they are not even thinking about raising rates for two years? What bond fund would you suggest when rates do start to increase? If I bought XBB , which bond fund would best act like a hedge to it? The idea is to collect a small yield and preserve capital.

Q: What are thoughts on bonds to balance a portfolio? I realize most are not enthusiastic about these right now, but I like to have a bit of them based on what I am used to. Are these a good buy now since they seem to have bottomed, or with interest rates the way they are, should I stay away?

There is also a lot of talk out there of stock market bubble right now so I thought this could protect the portfolio to some degree. I am new and appreciate your thoughts on what you would do here. Thank you

Q: Hello! Wondering if you still like TMX group and Thompson Reuters. They both seem to be trading sideways when many stocks are gaining. As well, I know you really like BAM but this too, has been heading lower when many stocks like financials and insurers are going higher. In a diversified portfolio is it better to have a mix of different companies and just be patient with stocks that are doing nothing, as opposed to selling those (which may have potential) and moving into something like TD or SLF which seem to have more momentum right now. Dividends and growth are my objectives. Thank you!

Q: I am seeing a PE of 730 (trailing) and 303 (forward). how long do you think it will take to "grow into these PE's" based on current earnings/profit growth etc. and what PE do you think it will eventually settle into??

Q: Thanks 5i Team - what an excellent service!! May I have your comments on my TFSA strategy and an ETF recommendation. My TFSA is almost fully funded and divided into 3 notional "buckets". Roughly 1/3 is comprised of growth securities, selected from the 5i Growth Portfolio, with my current positions being KXS, XBC, WELL and LSPD; Roughly 1/3 is comprised of about 10 Canadian "dividend growers", about half of which are among the 5i Balanced Equity or Income Portfolios such as ENB, EIF, PBH, BIP.UN and BEP.UN and the other half well known blue-chips like T, CNR, CNQ and RY; and the final 1/3 is a single, conservative diversified ETF, currently Vanguard Conservative Portfolio VCNS, which I refer to as the "anchor". I prefer to limit the total number of securities to no more than about 20 (I am a few short of that right now) so I can adequately manage things, and I add to VCNS while awaiting opportunities to purchase positions in the other securities I own, or to sell from if cash is needed so I can continue to hold the individual growth and dividend securities. I am looking for reasonable growth in my TFSA over a 5-10 year period, and I can tolerate some risk but prefer to avoid excessive volatility or risk. My questions are: (1) are these 3 roughly 1/3 buckets a sensible approach for reasonable growth over a 5-10 year horizon or would you recommend different weightings or approaches, (2) could you recommend 1 other diversified ETF that I might consider for the "anchor" portion, and (3) could you recommend 2-3 other securities for the growth portion, to add a bit more diversification.
