Q: Multiple questions:
According to my information 92 percent of Fortis’s revenue is from regulated sources. As such would increases in interest rates only effect the company in the short run as the increases in interest expense would eventually be passed on to the consumer when changes in the rate base are applied for by the company and granted by the regulators? This ignores the maturity date of the company’s debt and the fact that the rate base increase granted may be less than that applied for.
Not in your area of expertise but I would appreciate your opinion on state owned China Mobile (CHL: US) and Omega Healthcare (OHI: US) as to their suitability from a risk perspective for an income oriented retiree.
Thank you for considering these questions.

Q: I am concerned about rising interest rates and the recent performance of utility stocks. Should I sell my Fortis and BEP shares and add to my position in SLF ? Is it possible that the affects of rising rates are already priced into these utility stocks ?

Q: I own about 16% utilities - all have been falling quite a bit recently. Based on my limited knowledge of technicals, it seems that they are all at their support levels (except TRP which appears to be below that level). Is it time to buy into these utility stocks based on technicals, or does it seem that they are going to fall some more based on interest rate hike fears, so it would be best to lighten up on utilities? or just do nothing?

Q: Hi,
My retired father holds the above stocks in a TFSA in equal positions. I'm looking to add one or two more stocks with the 2018 TFSA contribution. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Q: Some weeks ago I decided I wanted to buy Fortis and/or Emera. Since then they have been both dropping and I am waiting for them to bottom out. Their chart is horrible for what I consider blue chips. Is this decline based on interest rate fears or is it a general rotation or is there another reason? I favour Emera for income but Fortis for growth so I may split the purchase. Do you have a favourite?

Q: I already have a 3.9% position in KWH.UN and would like to add another 3% position in a utility. I am leaning toward AQN but worry that I am putting too much into the renewable sector. Should I be concerned and buy FTS instead for diversification purposes ? And is a 7% utility portfolio weighing appropriate ?

Q: Hello Peter,
I hold a balanced total portfolio across my TFSA, RRSP and non-registered accounts. I keep my highest dividend payers in my non-registered and currently have them on DRIPs. Are there any of theese that you don't think should be on DRIP because they are too risky?

ALA, KWH.UN, FTS, BNS, SLF, GS, NWH.UN, ECI, EIF, BCE

Q: Hello Peter
As a recent new member, I am both impressed and a little overwhelmed with all the information. I started making a lists of potential companies to invest with, but decided to cut to the chase and just ask you....I am looking for your recommendation for both income and growth companies.... perhaps 4 or 5 of each. I am fully invested in TD, which has done well for me this last year, as well as a couple energy stocks.... Spartan and Ring. I am retired but have a steady income flow with pensions and dividends from an ongoing business. Thank you for offering such a great service and look forward to a bright and lucrative future. Brian

Q: You recently answered another question in the following words.
you may be best served by a well-diversified conservative (or even balanced) portfolio. For your equity component (what ever allocation you decide) stay focused on large-cap dividend payers and weight defensive sectors generously.

If I want to stay with Canadian stocks only, please name your top 10 stocks that would fit this bill.

Thanks.

Q: I am a retired investor living on dividend income. I recently sold some assets and now have 15% of my portfolio in cash. I want to invest the cash across 5 stocks yielding minimum 3.5%. Can you recommend your top picks regardless of sector.
