Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Hello,

My partner and I heard about 5i from a friend whose been using you for many years. You came with the highest recommendation.

I feel like I should be copying one of your portfolios, especially due to my lack of knowledge, but it is very important for me that my investments to follow my ethics.

I would like to know which companies on your balanced and growth portfolios would be highest on positive environmental, social and corporate governance, which are low and should be switched and for which companies. I'm happy to do research, but I'm struggling to navigate the important statistics and feeling incompetent in finding good resources. I have seen your ESG scores (https://www.5iresearch.ca/blog/ESG-tsx-companies) and would be keen to know where to find information on how they are created. I would also appreciate other resources that you think would assist in building a portfolio, or simply which companies you would put on it.

Thank-you,
Ellen Perkins

Q: We have been looking at these four companies but only have resources to take positions in two of them. Which two would you consider the best choices for returns over the next couple of years?

Q: I have had these 2 stocks for the last 3 and 5 respectively. Regardless of sectors, I am thinking of selling both and buy for a 3 year period at least Docusign. Your opinion on future growth for this move? Is it worth it?
Thank you again.

Q: Hi Peter, Ryan, and Team

In our combined accounts, and looking at the Technology sector, I find that we have too much OTEX. Our other holdings in this sector are CSU, ENGH, KXS, and XIT. Please rank, in order of preference, where some OTEX can be sold, and one or more of the listed holdings could be purchased with the proceeds. I always value your timely advice.

Q: I currently own these tech stocks: GOOG, CSU, SHOP, KXS, LSPD, OTEX, and GIB.A. I want to consolidate and simplify my holdings based on balance sheet and growth projection thru this pandemic. I'm thinking of selling two out of this list and am leaning towards selling either, LSPD, OTEX or GIB.A. Which two would you pick and the reasons behind? Thanks so much.

Q: Morning 5i,

As someone hoping their is a significant pull back. Seeing the overvalued stretching....

I am looking to add some diversification and growth with the "safest" possible.

My picks are;
BAM.A
BYD
REAL
OTEX
GSY
ATD.B
NTR
CNR
Is their additional ones that you can suggest or a couple swaps that are "better" overall.

Thank you for all the tireless fun!

Q: Hi, I currently hold CGI and have held it for a couple years now up 60% in registered account. I'm looking to switch to OTEX, DSG, or ENGH for more growth long term, what do you think? Can you rank these 4 stocks. I already own SHOP, KXS, LSPD, CSU and don't want too much overlapping tech. Thanks!

Q: I have a full position in kxs partial position in otex and a small position in lspd. I am looking to add more tech to my tfsa and considering either gib.a or dsg. Which would you recommend and is there much overlap between what I already have and dsg and gib.a? Thank you.

Q: Hi,

What are the top 3-5 Canadian tech companies that you think still undervalued, have potential to recover their heights and to grow beyond that?

Q: I currently own DSG,KXS,LSPD,OTEX,PHO,SYZ. I know you took out SYZ some time ago and can't find what you replaced this stock with? I know you still follow SYZ and just wondered if you feel that there is a better stock than SYZ or would you continue to hold this stock with the other stock mentioned?
Thanks

Q: Hello
I would like to have your outlook on both companies.
Which one do you see as a buy in the current COVID situation with more companies favoring working employees from home .
Can you also comment on the companies earnings and debt.

Thank you

Q: 5i guys!
Taxation clarity.
TFSA; Mostly hold Canadian dividend paying stocks and ETF's on the TSX.
Hold a Canadian ETF with US stocks. Withholding tax applies I believe.

RRSP; US Exchange American dividend stocks and ETFs.
My fuzziness.
TSX listed companies that pay dividends in USD.
Ex. AQN. OTEX.
As a canadian company purchased on the tsx is this tax exempt under TFSA?
Or does it fall under the withholding rules as an American stock unlike RRSP's exemption.
*take another question credit*

If in fact exempt. Does Questrade convert for free. I am curious if I should allow the conversion since I purchase with canadian in my TFSA. Or save up the USD and perform Norberts Gambit once in awhile.

Really enjoying everything you have to offer.
Fantastic and many thanks for all the investing improvements.

Thank you

Q: Have been dithering on having a greater tech exposure for my portfolio due to my ignorance of the space. Nonetheless, have narrowed down to two choices, Descartes or Taiwan Semiconductor. Given their low correlation (.25) would you favor, one, the other or both? (anticipated total exposure < 5%) Currently have a small, speculative position in PHO:CA (<2%) Other solid, possibly dividend paying suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
