Q: Can you please provide the names of some Canadian blue chips with the best balance sheets regardless of sector?

Hope you are all well.

My wife's portfolio accounts (RSP,TFSA,CASH) on a consolidated basis show the following asset allocations by % sector type:

Tech --- 38%
Telec -- 0%
Financ - 4.6%
Cons --- 6.8%
Mater -- 0.6%
Reits -- 1.8%
Energy - 3.8%
Util/Pip - 4.0%
Indus --- 2.6%
Health - - 0%
CASH --37.8%

Obviously, quite a few glaring gaps to fill ... could you please suggest some top of mind positions in the key underallocated sectors that would provide a more rational and balanced portfolio thesis.

Q: I am underwater with all of my holdings. SHOP is currently down 46%, GSY is down 16% and NPI is down 17%. Should I sell and cut my losses or hold? Can I hope for SHOP or the others to recover in 2-3 years time?

Q: March 2 the market had quite an up day thanks to J. Powell but these 4 stocks went in the opposite direction - some as much as 5% CELH (has recovered and then some), U, SHOP and TOI. Of the 4, can you give me a bit of an explanation. The drastic down and up move in CELH and the down moves in the other 3. Many thanks.

I own both of these and have done well. I consider them long term holds. Bruce Flat has stated last quarter he sees 20% growth per year over several years. Apollo has merged with Athene (insurance /annuities etc). My question is, in an inflationary and subsequent rising interest rate environment, will these two companies face significant headwinds? Have we seen the “top” in the asset management class short to medium term? Please explain why or why not. Deduct as needed.

Q: Hi 5i team. Love what you guys offer here as I am a recent trial member who pulled the trigger and signed up. I currently hold ATZ, BAM.A FLOW GSY PRN SLF TOI VFV and WSP in a TFSA. I am looking at rounding out my portfolio to include one of: IIP.un, DIR.un, CAR.un for long term hold with focus on growth and ok with some volatility. So out of those 3 what would you suggest is the best one to choose? Also, any other suggestions you would consider adding to my portfolio for increased diversification based on my overall strategy? With stock prices much depressed I have concerns that some unprofitable growth companies will have a hard time raising sufficient cash to fund operations; at least without massive dilution.

My question is two part:
1. What is (are?) the best metrics to assess profitability of a company (net margins, cash flow, etc)?
2. From your Canadian list of companies which do you see as the most needy to raise cash within the next 6-12 months in order to continue to fund operations.

Q: It seems agriculture companies are doing well in the current and probably future environment. NTR looks good but has already moved up a lot. Appreciate your opinion on whether it is still wise to take a new position. Also, do you know of other companies that should benefit from the current dynamics. I'm open to Canadian or other ideas.

Q: Read your answer to Ken's question dated Feb 25, 2022 to STLC question. You answered "..with the pricing discrepancy on the basis of hedging through the use of futures, management noted significantly lower prices for steel, which will dampen revenues." Looking at the charts for US steel companies: where NUE and RS hit new highs and X rose 10.45% on Friday. I would have thought this price action would also be reflected in Canadian steel companies (ie: STLC, RUS) based on "A tide rises all boats" theory. However this was not the case on Friday. Is hedging and/or steel tariffs the reason? Or maybe something else? Thank you your insight.

Q: I have been holding STN for a number of years. It underperformed WSP in last 5 years by large margin, but started catching up in last 3 years. In recent stock market correction, STN dropped much less than WSP. STN is still above 200 day average while WSP is currently below 200 day average. Year to today WSP also underperformed STN. What is your view of STN and WSP going forward from here in terms of future growth? If just to own one name between them, which one would you pick? Alternatively, should I catch this opportunity to switch to WSP?

Q: The general technical pattern of the US markets and other markets to a lesser degree appears to be aggressively trending down, with the recent positive earnings now in the rear view and corrected, unfortunately. I’m reading your language from past comments that the year is expected to be rough for tech but I think it is worth noting that the trend line underway for major indices and even successful companies appears to be headed down and possibly with much bigger drops ahead.
Could you please comment on where you see this from your perspective? Do you expect a sizeable drop ahead and do you advise any mitigation at this point either to rebalance or to sell any current holdings, such as small caps, tech, high debt or other potentially at-risk assets that may be staring down a large drop.
Almost nothing looks to be at a ‘bottom’. To echo a lot of headlines, it looks like there could be a slide ahead.
