Q: Hello Peter,
Why is suncor not participating to the same degree as others in the sector with surging oil prices? Would i be better off moving to another name and if so, which is a better buy? Also, what do you think of Amazon's results? The stock has not done much if looking at one year timeframe.. Given the potential rise in rates, is it better not to take full position in Amazon? Thanks.

Q: My only oil/gas exposure is via the pipeline stocks listed. I am virtually at a break even point on PPL and up on TRP and ENB. I am thinking that some exposure to a oil producer is a good thing. I am thinking of selling PPL and using the proceeds to buy SU. Thoughts?

Q: Hi Peter, Ryan, and Team,

Like many members as well as 5i, I am increasingly frustrated with PKI. For example, it dropped 5.2% on January 18. :(

We hold PKI in both my wife’s and my RRIFs. Both holdings are still up, but I’m considering exiting PKI while we’ve still made some money.

I was considering equal purchases of SU, CNQ or CVE, TOU, and KEY for each RRIF (2 for each RRIF). Would you be OK with such a move? Please rank these 5 stocks for safety and upside.

Another move I was considering is to raise our US exposure by buying Vanguard’s ETF VDE. (According to Portfolio Analytics, we’re underweight in the energy sector, as well as USA). Would you endorse this purchase, which would be for our non-registered account? Am I correct in assuming that any withholding taxes shouldn’t prevent this purchase in a non-registered account?

I also manage our son’s TFSA, and unfortunately his holding in PKI is down by quite a bit. I intend to hold it, but would certainly exit it if 5i drops it from the Balance Equity Model Portfolio. Is 5i considering such a move?

Please deduct sufficient credits, and thanks as always for your insight and guidance.

Q: Hi team!

I've owned both SU and CNQ over the years and I have done well on both. It is my impression that when comparing these two, you tend to prefer SU over CNQ, but given SU's underperformance, dividend cut and operational issues, shouldn't CNQ be the preferred choice. CNQ has gone from about $10 during the pandemic crash to $66 while SU has gone from $16 to $36 because of the issues noted above. Suncor is cheaper, but maybe its cheaper for a reason. Operational issues are still a factor as recently as December and early January.

Q: I want to acquire a full position in Suncor (5% of my portfolio). It has been on a tear since the middle of December and currently trades significantly above its 20 day moving average. I don't want to buy all the shares at the current price. What strategy would you suggest I use to purchase these shares ?

Q: I am underweight both consumer cyclicals and energy. Today, which would you buy: MG, SU or ENB? Goal is income, plus some growth. Thank you.

Q: Assuming the price of oil remains relatively strong for the next 1-2 years, please rank these three companies in terms of their upside potential over that period.

Thanks, Rick

Q: Hello Peter and Team

I have above stocks in my TFSA account. I am down CAE 10%, NVEI 47%, ENGH 17%, KXS 24%, LSPD 12%, QIPT 18%.

Normally I will consider all of them as good growth stocks but with the rotation now hapening in the market, I am wondering if I should keep them for the next 12 months or I should switch to more value stocks.

I value you opinion

Raouf

Q: Could you please provide your top two picks in both the materials and energy sectors?
I don't have any investments in materials now and wonder if I should have something. Currently I hold ENB and PKI in energy and am thinking of switching PKI for TOU or SU.
The remainder of my portfolio is well balanced and as a retiree stability and income are more important than speculative growth.

Q: Despite the significant increase in Energy stocks, I am looking to add some exposure. Do you see more upside in 2022 and beyond? Please rank the companies above for a 2-5 year hold.

Q: Hi, Needed your opinion on Energy Sector allocation for 2022 and beyond. Most strategists are predicting another solid year for Energy sector, although, 2021 was a huge comeback for the sector. What's your take ? If you support this view, what will be your Best 5 to 7 ideas, based upon a balance of Current Valuation, Growth, Lower risk/volatility and some Dividend income. Thank You

Q: The listed oil and gas companies comprise a 4% weight in my portfolios. I have been dying in oil and gas for about a decade. However, not counting the capital losses I have taken over the years, the current portfolio of legacy and new acquistions is miraculously above water. I have promised myself to never again be so exposed to the world's most manipulated commodity. If I'm going to folow though on this self-promise I need to think about liquidating some of these positions. Question: in what order would you take down these positions?
Best wishes for 2022. David

Q: Top 3 favourite O&G to hold irrespective of portfolio mix. Canadian or US or international. Large, mid, or small cap. Doesn’t matter upstream, midstream, downstream. Just what 5i likes now and briefly why. Maybe an honourable mention if you have one.

Cheers!
