Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Hello,

Thanks for the response to my earlier question regarding which of the income stocks you would hold in a TFSA. Can you comment on my first statement regarding the illiquidity of the stock and how that would cause someone with a significant investment to be challenged in acquiring as much as what the daily volume has been? I have never thought of myself as a MM and I prefer not to be. Thanks.

Q: Deal terms are not yet available for the WFG buyout, I own 150 shares, bought at 113/share a few weeks back.

What are your initial thoughts? Hold and tender to the bid (whatever it is, presumably higher than $125 CAD/share)? Hold out for a white knight (seems unlikely)? Sell now and capture the gain in case the deal falls apart?

Something else?

Thanks for your time

Q: I have losses in these four equities (between 10% and 25%) and was contemplating selling them. Would you continue to hold onto these equities or would you sell? What order would you sell them in?

Q: Your last report for SJ was in June 2021 and it received an A- rating. Do you still see this stock in the same category as SLF? I read in the GAM that SJ is getting into less profitable regular lumber and investors don't like it. Value metrics look good with F P/E 9.6, P/S 0.77, EV/EBITA 8.10, however, by comparison WFG appears to me to have a much better valuation: F P/E 3.7, P/S 0.83 and EV/EBITA 1.56. WFG seems the clear choice today. Would appreciate your comments for a long term investment in SJ and/or WFG. Thanks!!

Q: HI Peter and Staff

I own ITP in my basket of materials stocks. Trading at $1 below proposed sales price.

Assume the $9.99 * 2 is not an issue would you pull the trigger now and increase a modest position in TECK.B or wait for the sale to close?

Also assuming position in TECK.B is not overweight regardless of answer to first question would you continue to hold WFG in the basket or dump it in favour of increasing position in TECK.B?

Thanks for you you do

Q: Hi, One of my friends who is constructing a house told me costs of 2x4’s have gone up by five fold recently.. Is that reflected in the stock prices of companies like West Fraser? Is it too late to get in?
Also what are your thoughts on Aritizia going into this tough environment of higher interest rates and inflation..Will apparel companies typically prosper in such an environment? Thanks.

Q: Hi - can you please provide your reasons as to whether you would be a buyers of these three stocks at current prices...or a hold...or sell. For a growth investor (otherwise please ignore other factors such as investor objectives/diversification etc.)

Q: My wife and I are in our mid-late 70's and only have investments in RRIFs.

We don't have any stocks in the materials sector and I would like to add something that has either solid growth potential or pays a dividend to add a bit more balance. I once invested in gold (BTO) and didn't do well, so I'm not particularly interested in that unless it meets the criteria above.

I am, however open to all suggestions. I have 6% space to allocate to your recommendations, so please advise accordingly.

Q: WTG has announced a "modified dutch auction" to buy back $1Billion worth of shares.
Is there anything to be learned from previous companies that did this? The trading activity is going to be skewed for the next few months. I believe the price will trade closer to $98 over the next few weeks.

I owned shares of HCG when they did a similar proposal and I recall regretting not selling to the market just before the offer closed because it traded above the cutoff price.

Thanks Dave

Q: Can you tell me your thoughts about the long term prospect for this company and why do you think it has been such a weak performer over the last month? Do you think it's growth has peaked? I've held this since 2014 and added a bit more in 2015 for an average entry price of around $32.00. Should I hold or sell?

If I was to replace this company in my RRSP could you give me three alternate companies in the material sector I should look into as possibilities for long time hold, hopefully with dividend and growth prospects?
