Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: My young grandson has $450 to invest. I have agreed to purchase the stock (s) in a non registered account. Long term hold. I'm picking up the trading cost. Suggested a stock (s) that trades under $10. Can you recommend one or two stocks to consider. This is more of a learning exercise for him. Thanks for your wonderful service.

Q: Hi,
In Eddy Elfenbein's latest CWS Market Review, he mentions Mueller Industries as a great company that gets almost no coverage. I didn't find any previous questions on MLI here.

From my limited sources, it seems to have a low P/E and relatively low debt, and a high margin between earnings and dividend payouts. Earnings growth this year looks excellent and next year not bad.

What's your take on the company? Does it look like a good long-term investment? Thank you. Michael

Q: Faced with a breath-taking loss in the shares of this barking hound,
I'm thinking that even though it has had a very short existence, it might
be wise to dump it now before tax-loss selling seems likely to crush it
completely in the coming months and maybe turn it into a penny stock.
What say you? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Q: Are withholding taxes treated the same whether in personal taxable accounts versus being in corporate accounts? In other words, is there a benefit to having certain ETFs in personal taxable account versus a corporate account?

Thanks

Q: Barron’s article recommended investing into stocks related to synthetic biology(e.g. genetic programming to make designer yeast that synthesize commercially important compounds). ZY, AMRS, SNRG were mentioned. I am interested in seeing your top choices in this space.

Q: Hi 5I
We all know the importance of well managed companies and how it plays into long term success.
CSU has been one of the companies that has displayed a gold standard to this success.
In your professional opinions which other 5 companies show best management qualities for success for the long term? Regardless of sector. I'm not sure if you will be able to answer this question but thought it would be interesting even if some of the evidence is anecdotal.
Thanks
Cal

Q: Hi,

In a previous response you indicated that you would use ETF's to complete the fixed income portion of a portfolio. Could you explain your rationale for this as I have been under the impression that any ETF, even a bond type, carries substantially more risk that purchasing a bond directly. I have a couple of short term bond ETF's but have more money allocated directly to bonds/GIC's in my portfolio.

Thank you.

Q: Hi 5i team
A number of questions on LSPD's write-offs of Accounts Receivable please.
- Note 13 of LSPD's March 31, 2021 audited statements shows an Allowance for Loss on Accounts Receivable of $3,519 against Trade A/R of $15,477, or well over 20%. Do you see anything concerning in this?
- Also, LSPD did not disclose the 'movement' in their Allowance for Bad Debts a/c for the year. Is that disclosure not required by GAAP?
-Does 5i have any information on Receivable write-offs during the year?
-I ask the above questions knowing that LSPD plans, as I understand it, to start extending financing to certain customers. I would prefer if LSPD stayed with their core business, and did not become a bank to their customers. How does 5i feel about LSPD extending financing to customers.
Thank you for your comments.

Q: I hope all is well. My portfolio is reasonably well diversified (in my opinion) and I have some extra cash to invest in an unregistered account. Would you have any reservations about investing in theses three stocks equally i.e., NVDA, QCOM, MU (it would be a relatively small position in each). I know you like the first two but I don't understand what the issues would be with MU. Thanks again.
