Q: Hello 5i. Accepting the premise that stocks are going to enter a bear market, how do you expect commodities to perform? It seems they are generally inversely correlated?

If one wanted to invest on this theory, what commodity ETFs would you recommend?

Q: Merry Christmas everyone and thank you for a wonderful service! I'm looking to purchase six different companies that have preferred shares and would like you to help me pick them. Security of dividend and safety of the companies (staying power) is the top priority here. Therefore if two preferred picks are in the same sector I don't mind as I'm not sure how much diversity matters here.

I currently own TRI and CSU preferred shares and would also like your opinion on them, thanks.

Q: You recently Initiated a position in Acadian Timber (ADN). You state It pays slightly more than its annual free cash flows in the form of dividends.
1] Why do you think this is good to pay more than its annual free cash flow in the form of dividends?
2] How does the company make a profit after paying dividends?

Q: I am a 56 yo retiree with no intention of going back to work. All my income comes from my investments. I generally pull out each year the cash the investments generate without needing to sell any shares as that is more than sufficient for my lifestyle. Is there any benefit to converting my RRSP (or part of it) to a RRIF at my age? Other than no withholding tax - which I don’t really view as a benefit since the tax has to be paid anyways - is there any reason to convert prior to being required to do so? Thanks in advance.

Q: With the economy slowing down would you trim cyclical stocks like TFII? I have a 6% position at this time, well into profit. I may use some dry powder later if the market keeps on getting hammered. My current cash position is about 10%.

Well one more day and we can turn the page on 2022. My thanks for your service and remaining composed through difficult times. Your professionalism is what keeps me glued to the service.

My question pertains to TOI and SHOP that I hold in a cash account. I want to move them into my TFSA where I hold the majority of my position in these companies. I’m down about $800 on shop and $600 on TOI. If I transfer them I lose the tax loss. If I sell and wait the 30 days I spend 40 bucks to make the trades and would have a 1400 capital loss which equates to net 700 to claim. Then I have to hope that the stocks do not rise to cancel out the gain. Any suggestions? If I buy first and sell after 30 days, I run the risk of the stock dropping and I’m even worse off.

Any suggestions? I am tempted to just transfer the stocks and forego the tax loss which is minimal.

Q: I received a Dividend Distribution Reminder from RBC regarding a NNRG dividend...$4.18/share. Ex-div date of Dec 29/22 and payment date of Jan 09/23. I've kept the email and reread it several times.

I would have expected the share price to drop roughly $4/share on Dec 29, but I have seen no share price movement anywhere near that level.

Can you shed some light on this? I have gone to Eric's website and see no dividend notifications. Could this be a mistake somewhere in the RBC system (doubtful)? Or...is there a chance I might receive the cash equivalent of the dividend on Jan 09/23 (I know...pipe dream)?

Q: I currently have the following positions in the "FAANG" stocks: GOOGL (5%), MSFT and META (each less than 2%), AAPL (less than 1%).

Not interested in NFLX since I already have positions in DIS and ROKU, but I'm open to AMZN (although I have a small position in SHOP, less than 2%).

I want to reduce the number of stocks I own, so I'm looking to consolidate my FAANG positions. In what order would you rank the FAANG stocks at today's prices for potential future returns?

I have a long time horizon (decades) and a very diversified portfolio, so not worried about short-term declines in share price.

Q: Hello, I am thinking of adding to Canadian companies with safe dividend. Current dividend yield for good companies is around 6% and with dividend tax credit, this seems like a good return. I have cash in US$. The question is: 1. Is it better to convert US$ cash to CDN$ and buy these securities traded in CDN$ on CDN exchange. Or 2. Is it better to buy these securities traded in US exchange and traded in US$. The advantage is to avoid converting US$ cash in CDN$. Please comment on the following assumptions:
• Dividend paid by CDN companies traded on US exchange in US$ is also eligible for dividend tax credit?
• Dividend could be paid in US$ or CDN$
• Company or broker will issue T5 in either case
• What currency the T5 will be issued in?
• One has to calculate gain/loss and dividend due to exchange rate difference
• Exchange rate will impact Gain/loss for the CDN securities traded on US exchange and the gain/loss will be different for the two securities. The same dividend yield will be different also.
