Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I'm a little stuck on what I should do now. Sitting at around 5% cash. I'm a growth investor 10+ yrs. With the market backdrop currently posing a headwind for growth stocks, how long does this process/rotation usually play out? Months vs years? I'm holding some value stocks but definitely lean more towards growth. What would be some questions I should ask myself through this process before I allocate my cash? Do I add more to my value stocks to create a barbell strategy or keep nibbling away at growth stocks and ignore the short term market noise? I keep gravitating back to growth names during my searches. Thanks!

Q: How do you evaluate how much debt is safe for a company like Enbridge? At a glance, their debt is massive and their CR is well below 1. I realize this is the case with utilities generally but why is this not considered high risk? At what interest rate does the company become high risk and/or unattractive to investors? Thanks.

Q: Has Amazon’s online retail segment ever made a profit? Will it ever given its never-stopping investment into the future? If no prospect of profit, what’s the point of keeping on investing into the segment? Do you like its retail model - owning and selling goods? Isn’t Alibaba’s model better by only providing online retail space? Thanks. Liping

Q: I’ve read the previous questions about AAPL’s movement into the payments space and their direct challenge to SQ. I have LSPD, NVEI and GSY in the financial space. Given the potential reach of ApplePay and the evolution of Buy Now Pay Later (along with other innovations I may not even be aware of), could you please discuss potential future challenges that may negatively impact the 3 companies I hold. Thanks!

Q: In response to previous questions on your site, you've discouraged owning stocks such as Annaly and AGNC Inv. Corp.

Does this view change-- for better or worse -- now that interest rates are likely to rise and the Fed stimulus is reduced? Why?

Q: Hello,

I would be interested in hearing your top 6 choices for Canadian stocks (or possibly ETFs) with reasonable yields (2% or more) where you would consider the stock/ETF price to be relatively safe in the current and near-future environment, e.g. rising interest rates and inflation.

Please exclude SLF as I already own it, and include no more than one bank stock (or ETF) in the list for diversification.

Thanks!

Q: I have a cash account set up that I draw from when needed. I am looking for dividends, safety and a bit of growth. I have all of the above in nearly all the same amounts but would like to add one more. Ignore diversity as I have all that covered by other accounts.
