Q: 2 Questions related to Canadian stocks paying dividends in USD:
(1) I want more US cash and plan to have Questrade journal over the above CA stocks to the US equivalent in a TFSA. Is there any special considerations here when doing this? Best to do this on a day when the Canadian dollar is stronger?
(2) In a margin account, Questrade journaled over AQN:CA to AQN:US on February 3/22. I have held AQN:CA for more than 1 year and sold all of AQN:US today at a small loss. Will CRA see the later loss as a superficial loss, because the US listed stock was held for less than 30 days? Thanks!

Q: I would like more USD for travelling to the US. I hold all of the above stocks at Questrade, in both registered and unregistered accts. I asked Questrade to please pay the dividend directly in USD (as paid by the companies), but they said "We would have to journal your positions over to the USD equivalent in order to receive the dividends in USD." Should I journal over the CAN shares to the US equivalent; eg AQN.TO to AQN.US? It would involve a very large amount of money, could I expect a better USD exchange rate with greater volume or would they simply use the day's spot rate?

Q: I have these holdings in a TFSA shown in descending %. First four at 15% each. Next three at 10% each. Adding $7000. Any additions to what I have? Any new ones? I appreciate the %'s are personal choices ( Part of let the winners run camp). Would you advise trimming?
Have good day. Thanks.

Q: Can I have your thoughts about these stocks and ETF’s for someone with a 3 to 5 year timeframe and who is in their mid 30’s?

Thanks

Q: Hello,
In the same vein as my question about BCE/T/RCI.B....
I own BIP.UN, BEP.UN and AQN in the same income-generating portfolio, around 16% of the total.
Does owning AQN simply duplicate the same space that BEP.UN does better, or is there some value to owning both?
Thanks again.

Q: I would like to sell BEPC to lock in a loss and then rebuy in 30 days. Do you see anything from the company or the market that might result in an increased price in that time period. Can you recommend a similar company to purchase for the 30 days that would reflect any market fluctuations. I already own AQN in this space.

Q: Hi,

What are your thoughts about my current portfolio? I am also looking at adding ZRE.TO and ZWC.TO.

Appreciate your help.

Q: We recently initiated a TFSA for a family member (long-term buy & hold); the 10 securities purchased (in approximately equal amounts) were: Aritzia (ATZ), Unilever (UL), GoEasy (GSY), SunLife Financial (SLF), BAM (BAMa), WSP (WSP), Algonquin Power (AQN), Telus Int'l (TIXT), and an ETF called XUSR. Still have ~15% capital (~$12,000) to invest. Which 3 or 4 of these would you have greatest conviction to add to? And/or is there another security which would complement the above?

Q: 30 days ago I sold AQN, BEP.UN, and SJ for tax losses, and replaced them with CPX, BAM and ADN, respectively, thanks in large part to your advice plus some other research I did.
Which of the "replacements" would you shed in favour of a return to the original holdings (as originally planned). I'm thinking CPX out/AQN (or BEP) back in, ADN out/SJ back in, but hold BAM and skip BEP (or AQN). Does that make sense to you?
Portfolio objective is ~ 8-10-year holds (except for harvesting tax losses occasionally) with dividend growth.
What comments would you have on the timing of these transactions in light of the current market turmoil?
Thank you.

Q: Hi Peter, Ryan, and Team,

Portfolio Analytics indicated that we had too much Technology, and not enough Utilities. I recently sold XIT, and added more BEP.UN. In the Utilities sector, among our accounts, we own AQN, BEP.UN, and FTS. The Utility weightings are now AQN = 3.65%, BEP.UN = 2.86%, and FTS = 1.49%.

In 5i's answers to questions, I notice that you generally rate BEP.UN higher than AQN.

Recently, John Heinzl wrote in his "Yield Hog" column that he bought more AQN, and gave some good reasons for doing so. I'm now wondering if I did the right thing in adding more BEP.UN, and am asking for some "reassurance".

Finally, I note that PA still shows that we could add more Utilities. I would be doing this in a non-registered account, and am wondering what to add. Please rank AQN, BEPC (better tax advantage than BEP.UN), FTS, and NPI (this would be a new holding).

Thanks in advance for your insight.

Q: With the expected increase in electricity needs from the world-wide introduction of electric vehicles, I would like to establish a full position in one or two of the above renewable power companies. Would you please rank them in terms of current valuation, debt, revenue growth and dividend growth. Which would be your overall preference for a 5-10 year hold? If you have another recommendation, what would it be?

That you for all the assistance you provide the DIY investor.

Q: Renewable energy has been beaten up over the last year and seems to be fairly cheap at the moment. With quantitative tightening and raising interest rates on the horizon, would it be prudent to wait to see what happens with inflation before moving into this sector? Which of these names do you prefer? Thanks.

Q: I am looking to add to the utilities sector. I currently have FTS BIP.UN and AQN. Not really excited about AQN for the last year. I would like to add to my utility stock basket and looking for recs. Also might drop AQN. My horizon is 7-10 yrs.
