Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I am getting close to retirement and have saved sufficient funds for my retirement. I am also expecting an inheritance equal to or greater then my retirement fund. I have always been a do it yourself investor, but at what point should I hire outside advise? And how do I find someone I like.

I have enjoyed your advise and don’t think I’ll find anything significantly better. It also gives me the confidence to keep doing what I am doing. But it is a case of I don’t know what I don’t know. Is there a size of investment portfolio that you feel would benefit from professional advise.

Q: Earlier this year we created an equal weighted 'balanced' portfolio of 30 Canadian companies in a non-registered account. Most were chosen from companies either covered by a 5i research report or included in a 5i model portfolio. The remainder were chosen, based on the 5i Q&A section, from what appear to be 5i sector favourites. All purchases in the portfolio are made with the intent to be long-term holds (10+ years).

Our intent is to increase our investments in the 30 companies over time. We have recently increased our positions in BIPC and MG. At this time we would like to increase our investments in 10 of the remaining 28 companies. The intent is to increase the remaining 18 in approximately 6 months. Which 10 would you add to today? Please rank them, include a small blurb explaining each choice and indicate an approximate buy price. Thanks!

Q: Hi Peter,
If you sell a stock in a TFSA or a RRSP account, you can purchase the same stock in a non-registered account the very next day and do not have to wait for the 30 day rule?

Q: Further to previous questions on BAMR

BAMR has an outline of the characteristics of BAMR which after review makes BAMR different that the previous Brookfield spinouts (i.e. BEPC and BIPC)

https://bamr.brookfield.com/stock-and-distributions/tax-information

BAMR is a Bermuda Corporation, not a Canadian Corporation
BAMR is considered a foreign holding requiring reporting under T-1135
BAMR dividends are NOT Canadian Eligible Dividends

This information was not well presented during the initial spin out and came as a bit of surprise to me after review.

Thanks

Q: Both Sierra and Aura have excellent financials but seem evenly matched on their current “race to the bottom” vis-a-vis their stock price. Would your recommendation be to:
A) sit back and take Aura’s occasional dividend payout
B) sell
C) buy more should the decline finally hit bottom?
Thanks for your perspective.

Q: Good morning,

It looks like NVDIA posted excellent results - would like your take on the results and also your advice for someone who wants to start a position. Do you think it is wise to invest now or wait a little, and what would be a good entry price? The markets seem a little jittery as of late.

Thank you!
