Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Often investors have different time frames and so called short medium and long term come a bit confusing depending on who you talk to. For speculators short term could be as short as a fraction of a day (day traders) for others long term investors are for 10 years and beyond. How about clarifying what for 5I is short, medium and long term (ballpark).

Thank you

Yves

Q: Now that Powell has come out with a higher-for-longer interest rate plan at Jackson Hole, any thoughts on when high growth tech shares might finally begin to recover? 6 months? A year? Two years? Thx.

Q: I read in the Globe and Mail that certain banks are blocking their advisers from buying the HISA ETFs, placing them on “restricted lists” usually reserved for risky, volatile investments.
I take it HISA is referring to Evolve High Interest Savings Account Ticker: HISA  and trades on NEO exchange. At this moment, I have a chunk of cash that I would like to park and earn interest but am uncertain when I will need it.....say 3 to 6 months timeframe.
What is your take on HISA? Or is there some other such account that you would suggest I investigate.
Bottom line, I could also use a GIC at the bank, right?!
With the timeline being short, what would you suggest I lean towards?........Thanks.....Tom

Q: Hi 5i,

I understand that there are some well known Fear and Greed and Trend Indicators/Indexes available from CNN and Bloomberg. I was able to find the CNN Fear and Greed web site but, could not find the Bloomberg Fear and Greed and Trend Indicator. Is this available free to the public? If so, could kindly tell me where I can find it on the internet.

thanks

Q: Hi, How would you rate these companies for Utility/Renewable Power sector ? Northland Power has received a lot of attention recently from investors and analyst community and stock has made a good move. Do you rate this company as an attractive investment in this sector ? Will NPI be a good complement to add to an investment portfolio, with FTS and AQN already owned ? If so, what would be a decent entry level ? Thanks

Q: AT continues to struggle with their share price. My position is now down to 1%.
Interesting is that if I didn't hold it at a loss, I would consider starting a 1% position.
I heard somewhere it said " if you didn't own it, would you buy it" and if the answere was no then yes you should sell it.
So I think I will hold this one and "ride it out."
Question is - is my thinking Ok?
Thanks
John

Q: Hi, Could you please compare the two companies with respect to nature of their business, safety, income and growth prospects. I know, Enbridge also has a utility like natural gas delivery business to residential/businesses, not sure of TRP. Could you also comment on their historical stock performance, relative to each other. Do you think one is better than the other? We own ENB for many years and are considering to add TRP to our portfolio for income and growth, for 10-20 years. Thank You

Q: Good afternoon,

How would you play the water theme, with a focus on innovation and solutions to increasing stress on water systems worldwide? Would CWW or PHO be best suited?

I own AQN and HEO currently, know you like XYL too. Any other individual companies you would recommend? I know WWT is a microcap but do you think it has potential or is it too small for now?

Thanks in advance.

Q: I have never owned a REIT but started looking at a couple. In doing so I realized that I really don’t know what to evaluate in a REIT (beyond type of asset - land, commercial, residential, specialty) and things I normally see as red flags may not be here. Can you tell me a few of the most important fundamentals to look at when comparing REITS (negatives to watch out for specifically, and positive indicators). For example my initial concerns were steady increases on common shares outstanding (seems acceptable and typical of all REITS) and what debt levels are acceptable. If you could tag your favourite REITS today I would appreciate. I have only looked at LAND and IIPR so far.

Q: Wow, it appears that there will be further, possibly much further decline in stock prices over the next while. That got me thinking/wondering about trimming of selling Canadian stock held in the TFSA....and these stocks are also held in a trading and registered account. Some, like ATZ and PBH are in the consumer discretionary sector, a sector that might be considered more risky in the current market setting. An others, like GSY that is the loan business, a subsector of the financial sector. And finally, there is industrials like TFII, and a US position in TT that also sells into Europe which is in turmoil. This is a sample of the holds that are still in a gain position. Would you consider trimming back to a more risk appropriate weighting, selling the ones in TFSA and avoid income tax or just hold and ride it out???....Thanks for your insight....Tom
