Q: Hi,
Could you illustrate to us all what type of companies/stocks and/or sectors historically have performed the best ( or least worst ) over periods of recession/depression/stagflation and war times? And further, can you provide your top 5-10 CDN stocks that you think would do best in these situations, with at least half of them dividend payers please, if possible. Potential ETF and options strategies would be appreciated as well. Take as many points as you see fit.
cheers and thanks, Chris

Q: Hi 5i
I am bargain hunting so looking at Brookfield Renewable. I charted BEPC and BEP-UN and am puzzled by the significant outperformance of BEPC over 1-5 years. I don't think the div treatment should make that much of a difference. BEPC is 9% off 52 week high, BEP-UN 15% off. Your thoughts? And if I decide to buy, am I wrong to think BEP-UN could have more gain potential?
Thanks, Greg

Q: I note that this company appears to have stalled, do you have confidence in it returning to past valuations and more? Would proposed rate cuts not help? Is this company a good investment for the foreseeable future?

Q: how do you expect BIP to perform, now that we have more clarity (maybe) on tariffs ?
Both div at this level and share price not drifting any lower

I want to build a position in it as a "retirement" stock.
I have BIP.UN and BEP.UN at 3% each.

What are your fav options in this category currently?

Regards,
JR

Q: Brookfield was a significant beneficiary of large investments in clean power from the tech giants. Do you see other utilities in Canada or US benefiting similarly in the future? It seems that the utilities space offers a potentially stable growth space going forward with power demand going up. Is this worth the effort, for example, compared to chips or software as a growth investment avenue.

Q: Could you please explain the inter-relationship between these two stocks? I realize one is incorporated etc but I am interested in their holdings, especially because 1. BEPC is outperforming and 2. There are large US contracts that are shaping their business. It was my understanding that each had their own different contracts but they were essentially the same company at a high level. Are they impacted differently by their contracts with Google and Microsoft or will they both benefit equally? Are their operational strategies any different?
Thanks.

Q: I have about a 6-7% position in each of bep.un, bip.un and BN. I am thinking of adding a bit of BAM (eg.3%) But i am wondering if adding bam would duplicate too much of the components of the other three. Would Bam add much to my portfolio is there too much duplication?

Q: How significant is for BEP the recent contract it signed with Alphabet? The Market seams to like it with a +7% increase in the stock price but is it warranted?

Q: I have all three of these positions.

I'm happy to keep my capital invested in the Brookfield empire, but it feels inefficient and not thought out the way it sits in my portfolio, almost like a series of afterthoughts.

The breakdown of the three (as a % of their cumulative totals in my portfolio)

BN = 57%
BEPC = 8%
BEP.UN = 35%

(Ignoring the whole tax schmozzle with reg vs NR accounts),

Would you recommend any changes? That could include adding another Brookfield entity as a possibility.

Q: I can't keep all these Brookfield companies straight. If you want some growth with a dividend, for a long term hold, which would you prefer and why?

Q: What explains the big increase (around 7-8%) of the value of these stocks today? What do you expect for the future and what is best to do (buy, sell or hold)?

Q: BEP Brookfield renewal property is yielding over 6 per cent at the current unit price and it is trading in a tight range (about $30 to $33) the past few months. I add to my position when it gets near $30 and trim it when it gets near to $34. I think it is a good company to hold for income but what about capital appreciation? This stock used to trade up around $50!! Was that due to the 'green energy hype" of the past? I know that cost of capital is very important to high capital, low margin industries like power production, but BEP should have pretty low cost of capital since it belongs to the Brookefield group of companies, right?? Also I have scoured the company website to try and find out how aggressive BEP depreciates their assets, particularly the wind and solar since solar panels do need to be replaced as do those big blades on the wind turbines. I would like to know if BEP is depreciating these assets quickly enough, but I am not sure where to get that kind of info.

Q: After reading Peter's May 29th question on withholding taxes on Limited Partnerships [LPs] I worry a lot about the Brookfield companies, in particular about BEP.UN = Brookfield Renewable Partners LP. and BIP.UN = Brookfield Infrastructure Partners LP. Are these not limited partnerships?

You say they are "domiciled" in Bermuda I believe, and BAM is moving it's head office to the US so it is all most confusing. Are these companies safe to own now or should I just sell them and move on to other less worrisome companies? They are in my cash account. Trouble is I have very large unrealized capital gains in BIP.UN and BEP.UN and nice dividend income so really don't want to trigger the taxes.
Thank you......... Paul K.

Q: BEP hit an air pocket today may 22nd with a drop of 4.5% at the time of writing. The only thing I found that could explain it is Trump's "Big and beautiful" tax bill that, it seams, cancels the clean energy incentives. Do you think the drop is warranted or is it mostly a Mr. Market knee-jerk reaction? -- It seams to me BEP's international diversification should have cushioned the incentives cancelation.
