The class action lawsuits against TD bank may require a very large payout to settle, is it not better to wait until they settle and then buy the stock?. TD has pleaded guilty to all the charges and will have to payout for sure.
Q: Good afternoon
As a follow up to your response regarding your preference to purchase BN in a CDN$ Non Registered account would it also be advantageous to journal the BN shares that I currently hold in my US$ Non Registered account to my CDN$ Non Registered account given the relatively low value of the CDN$ and journal them back to the US$ account when the CDN$ regains some of its recent loss in value?
Thank you and I’ll await your sage advice,
Francesco
Q: Hi Folks,
I have a position in BKNG and would like to add to it after Wednesdays drop - may I have your opinion on the state of the company and whether adding to it at this time would be prudent.
Thanks
Q: I have two questions re: tax loss selling. I have a three year old gain that I can offset by selling the above holdings.
1. First please help me with the math. If I buy a stock for $100, sell it for $90, I have a loss of $10 which would mean I can expect a $2.50 tax loss at a 25% rate. Does this mean that if I wanted to buy the stock back after 30 days, I would only be better off if I buy it back at less than 92.50 per share? Do you have a threshold whereby you must be down by a certain amount to justify a tax loss sale? e.g. 20%? Unless of course you are walking away from a company.
2. Which of the companies listed would you consider buying back after 30 days? I have too many holdings as it is so may just let them all go unless something is particularly interesting. I am overweight technology, underweight everything else but otherwise have a broad mix of funds and stocks.
Now that Chairman Powell has clearly stated that people should NOT expect aggressive rate cuts, how do you think it will impact Small caps? Will they languish for some more time?
IF, a big IF, Small caps do come alive, do you think one should hold more of Small cap growth or Small cap Value?
Also your word of wisdom about buying Small caps over Mid caps? Wouldn't the latter (Mid caps) benefit more if the interest rates remain the same, more or less? Here the assumption is that the rate cuts will benefit Small caps.
Q: Hi Guys
Dream Industrial has been drifting lower all year, and hit a 52 week low. Seems to get no respect and yet everyone says increased Industrial space for logistics centres and data centres etc. are/will be needed. Is anything changed with this company fundamentally? Do you still like it into 2025?
Could you inform me what a realistic book value a share would be? And finally do you see it, like Pure Industrial, as a likely candidate for a takeout by a pension fund or private equity like Pure Industrial?
Q: Hi 5i Team - Could you explain the recent drop in IES holdings. I have read something about an acquisition but I don't quite understand IESC's involvement in it. Is there any negative fundamental change recently. Thanks.
My questions this morning is partly Currency related as it applies to BN in particular and your best idea for a stock to add to the "ALTERNATIVES" portion of my overall family portfolio.
Q1. Would you kindly recommend your best two ideas for a stock to add in the "Alternatives" portion of my overall portfolio.
Q2. For my US$ Non Registered account, I was thinking of adding some BN to the existing holdings by buying BN in CDN$ and journaling the CDN$ stocks over to my US$ Non Registered account as I have done in the past.
That said and given that the CDN$ has dropped significantly of late and with perhaps more to go, would it be preferable at this time to simply purchase BN in my CDN$ account and leave the shares in the CDN$ Non Registered account with no journaling into the US$ account.
Q: I have gains and outsized weighting in CSU, DSG, WXM. Planning to rebalance in the new year. I have been building positions in LMN and KXS and have a gain in those. I'm down and have smaller weightings in PBH, BYD, BEP.UN, AW. Which of these 6 would you suggest to add to in 2025?
Q: There can be little doubt that investors, since the elections of successive Trudeau administrations, have become increasingly wary about sinking money in Canada. Outflows double inflows of capital and our dollar's value has fallen by 20% retarding ROI's for investors. What is 5i's outlook for the Cdn$ and investment going forward?
Q: If I sell Brookfield Renewable Partners L.P. (BEP.UN:CA) that I hold in my RRSP, will I have to pay the 10% U.S. withholding tax on the total proceeds? As you know this tax was implemented on Canadian Limited Partnership companies last year, but I do not know if BEP.UN has taken steps to avoid it. Thank you
Q: MFC has just recently surpassed its previous peak in 2007 around $44. This was a long time coming, but it is struggling to stay above this value. Normally I feel that it is a good sign when a company that breaks through a previous high. Can I have your thoughts on MFC at this time, and why it may be a different company than it was 15 years ago.
Q: Could you comment on Civitas's valuation decline, are investors still concerned over 3rd quarter revenue miss or Jefferies target price cut?
Should we expect a cut to the dividend as stock price falls? Would you suggest this might be a 'safe' investment and a good entry point?
Thanks for all your great advice, much appreciated. Ted.
