It seems that the Brookfields are nothing but trouble from a taxable perspective and the new withholding tax may make it worse. The brokers will naturally take the withholding tax and it will be a fight to try to claim it back.

My question however is about the exchangeability of BEP.UN and BIP.UN into BEPC and BIPC. Can these exchanges still be made?

If I get my broker to do the exchanges does this become a taxable capital gains event? If so it is prohibitive for us as we have huge capital gains in both BEP.UN and BIP.UN which would prohibit the exchange.

Any suggestions on what to do?

Thank you......... Paul W. K.

Q: I am planning to sell these stocks for tax loss purposes. Can you suggest a proxy for each? I was thinking FTS for AQN, and possibly not buy it back, and perhaps not buying back OTEX either. Others planning to buy back after the 30 days. Your thoughts on whether or not buying back OTEX and AQN a good idea also appreciated.

thanks,

Q: Hello Peter,
I own all three. After the spinoff, I will have Brookfield Corp (that will own parts of all three, BEP, BIP, and BAM) and BAM (the asset manager). In this scenario, will BAM be direct competitor to Blackstone? Also, how is the spinoff different from the Trisura one? Lastly, the performance of BEP has not been that great so should i move on or just stick with all four for long term hold? Thanks very much

Q: I plan on journalling these stocks to my US account because the dividends are paid in $US. However, I am confused as to the appropriate listing name for BEP.UN on the NYSE as it appears to be the same as the one for BEPC, namely BEP. Is that correct?

Secondly, can you switch BEP.CA to BEP.UN:CA (or vice versa) in a non-registered account without the transaction being considered a disposition for tax purposes?

Appreciate your insight.

Q: Hi 5i,

I currently own the above noted renewable energy utilities. I am thinking of selling AQN. If I did so, (and I would like to keep it in renewables) would you recommend putting the proceeds towards one of the above or something like NPI or possibly a renewable energy ETF. Could you recommend 1 to 3 ETFs?

Thanks!!

Q: I've been building out a sub portfolio in my registered account with the above stocks. It's hard to turn down 5-7% yields + growth potential.

Do you perceive any major crossover/risk with the holding all of the above / should I consider consolidating?

Q: These stocks have been identified as the top 10 undervalued mid cap stocks. Would you consider any of these be buys and if so, (given no consideration for sector) can you list in terms of most favorable first. Also, which do you think will "hold on" best given the economic uncertainty and likelihood of recession.

Q: Hello, I hold BEPC, CSU in my Canadian account. I thought it was mentioned in the past that the shares can be kept in the CDN account but dividends can be put in the US Acct to avoid brokerage fees so I called TD Waterhouse and they said it’s not possible without transferring the shares to the USD Acct. Did I misunderstand? Is there another way around this?

Q: Please comment in more detail about the 25% drop in share price in the past month, the massive debt load at over 3x total equity - to increase I assume with recent acquisitions, and on what appears to be a major revaluation by the market. In your last report on BEP.UN (July/21) you stated the 12.4x forward sales multiple (at the time) was the lowest since 2019. Currently BEPC appears to be trading at less than 2x sales.

Q: I hold both BEPC and BEP.UN and would like to consolidate into one. Which company would be best to hold? Is this a move I can do now or is it best to wait or sell one and wait to buy the other after the market settles a bit?
Thanks

Q: I am trying build a list of buy and forget core stocks for each sector. I hold the following utilities in various accounts: FTS, BIPC, BEPC, AQN, NEE, BLX, NPI. Can you please rank these for safety and also for growth. I hold BLX in a corp account because it has the lowest yield - do you see BLX as a long term buy and forget stock? Thanks.

Q: Hi 5i team.
about 6 weeks ago sold AQN for a tax loss and increased position in FTS and bought some BEPC on top of BEP.UN as I am thinking of switching to BEPC to make life less complicated tax wise.
Problem (and a good one to have) is that I have a large capital gain in BEP.un.

Utilities portions as total of all portfolio.
BEP.UN is about 2%
BEPC about 1%
Fortis about 2%
Polaris about 1%

Question is what to sell or reduce to add in AQN back at about 2%?
Would you suggest a different mix?
I like the dividends and am OK w slow to moderate growth - retiree and looking at conservative ongoing investment. (I like all of these stocks.)

I am willing to pay some taxes as I worry about the capital gains tax rate rising at some point under our current government.
Subtract as many questions as needed.
Thank you.

Q: I own a mixture of these in both my RIF and non registered accounts and wish to consolidate them so as to only own one of each. Capital gains and tax need not to be considered. Which version of these 2 companies would you have in each of my two accounts ? Thanks.
