Q: I didn't have bonds this year and I wish I did even though it lost value it still did better than my portfolio tilted toward growth. If you were to initiate a bonds presence in your portfolio. Would you rather buy these 2 or one or the other. Any other suggestion is welcome.

Q: Hello 5i Team

I previously owned TransAlta (TA), when they cut the dividend in 2015/2016 and took the capital loss at the time.

I have owned RNW since 2015, so I currently have a small capital gain.

Upon RNW and TA news release on December 15, it appears the future for RNW is not great and several analysts have stated the best course of action would be for TA to take RNW private (similar to what Enbridge did with Enbridge Income Fund in 2018). Otherwise they indicated no dividend growth and a potential future cut in RNW dividend.

Questions are:

1 - Would it make sense to sell my RNW shares and purchase TA shares (essentially trading dividend income for future stock growth).

2 - Consider the RNW and TA not buyable and finally sell out RNW and buy something else. Any suggestions?

3 - Where does Brookfield fit in with Trans Alta, as they previously made a deal in 2018/2109 for a future purchase of TA hydro assets?

Q: Down 25% plus on these two subsidiaries so considering a tax loss sale. Would BN be a suitable proxy and stay onside with CRA rules? Other ideas?

Q: I recall once seeing a link to an explainer on all of the different Brookfield offerings. Can you please repost this. Is it up to date with the new BAM / BN thing?

Ideally hoping to see a tabulated summary including:
name of holding
nature of business
yield
ideal account type to hold in for optimal tax efficiency
closest competitor names

Which offering would you recommend for green energy income investment in an unregistered CDN$ account? Any comments on when is a good time to buy given recent structural changes and interest rate changes.

Q: Could the weakness in Brookfield shares be attributable to them funding $250 million of Musk's purchase of Twitter which he has stated "has been in the fast lane to bankruptcy"? New shares are being offered at $54.20 so Brookfield may have to cough up more too.

Apparently it's Brookfield Growth that stands to lose the money - is this an arm of BN or BAM?

Q: This is probably a silly question but I don't want to make a mistake.
Instead of raising 6500.00 cash for my TFSA on Jan 1st, I'm thinking about transferring stock out of my cash account instead. I've already sold my tax loss candidates. I'm not sure how this works though. If my book cost is 6500.00 and market value is 3000.00, does that mean I've contributed my full amount? And in what scenario would this be a smart idea? I could also transfer stocks with significant capital gains.

Q: General comment : first of all I wish a very happy Christmas and a wonderful New year to all of the team,and keep doing your exceptional job .. I establish my own strategy , (since I believe this should be compulsory ),and you were very helpfull in order to : 1) avoid mistakes when selecting stocks 2) to comment my choices of sectors and products in a volatile market and uncertain economic context and 3) to compare similar stocks and ETF.

Q: I remember that Peter has not always spoken fondly of Robert Friedland, while one of his former associates at Sprott, Rick Rule, has stated that Friedland is "serially successful." There is no doubt that Ivanhoe's DRC assets are first-class, but a recent article in the G & M has cast doubt on Ivanhoe's corporate practices in the DRC. The share price has dropped significantly as a result. Do you believe this is a buying opportunity, if not tomorrow then when the share price stabilizes? I am a long-term copper bull.

Q: What percentage of a portfilio would you allocate to renewable enegy. I have organized possible holdings into 3 groupings: A. asset allocators, like BEP-un, CWEN; B. technology enhancers, like ARRY, SHLS, RUN, C. Electric utility deliverers: AES, FTS. I would ssk that you recommend a your preferred namres for each grouping. My questions are: 1. Is this a useful way to organize and, if so, what percentage would you allocate to each grouping? 2. Q: LAC is buying (subject to approval) Arena by offering LAC shares but no cash. I currently hold AN and am wondering what your view of the takeover is; good, bad or indifferent? Does it make more sense to wait and take the LAC shares or sell for cash now. One concern I have is the LAC will be splitting into 2 companies but other than one company holding American properties and the other holding International properties (ie. AN) I can’t find details about the proportions of the new structure. I’m a little concerned about LAC AFTER the new companies are in place. The American focused company has current environmental issues that will presumably continue. I’m not looking for personal advice here just your opinion of a general nature. Deduct as my credits as necessary, I would value your insight as always.

Q: I note you recently indicated BNRE is only convertible into BN. I have only had BNRE for a few months. Hoped it would maybe pop 10-15% in 4-6 months. What are the advantages/disadvantages if converting BNRE to BN and would you recommend someone do that now or is there an advantage to wait until sometime next year (or not convert at all) ?

Q: I checked out the 5i Profile page for Theratechnologies to see if there was any news regarding the large drop on December 1st but didn't see anything. I checked out Theratechnologies Investor Relations website and found the press release regarding the enrollment pause on the Phase 1 clinicial trial of TH1902. Why doesn't this press release show up in the News & Media section on TH's Profile in 5i?
