Q: Hi Folks,
I am finally breaking even with BNS. I am thinking of selling it and with the proceeds I will top up RY. That will leave me with RY and TD as my bank holdings with a 15% weighing. With the remaining monies I am thinking of adding one of SLF, MFC or BAM. May I have your opinion as to which one you would recommend. This will be for my RRSP account which is fairly diversified.

Q: I’m trying to form a kind of hybrid of the Hodson and the Buffet approach to investing. Hodson: balanced portfolio. Buffet: a few excellent companies. So I would form a fairly balanced portfolio but be overweight considerably in a few.

Buffet says you are buying a piece of a business; you are not buying a stock. He and Munger don’t care about the stock market. They both say you don’t need very many stocks, no more than 5 or 6. They also say their approach is not for the average person, who usually doesn’t know how to value a business and should just stick to EFFs. Their approach is for someone who knows how to analyze and value a business. Peter Hodson and 5i do know how to analyze and value a business. (And in answers to questions 5i has also said several times that the way to build wealth is to own a small concentrated portfolio.)

On the other hand, 5i is all about building and rebalancing a diversified portfolio, covering all, or almost all, sectors. This approach is more concentrated than an ETF, but not as concentrated as a Buffet/Munger small set of quality companies. I don’t know anything about Sees Candy, Geiko, or Coke. But they certainly do.

If Buffet/Munger were looking only at Canadian companies, which few would they want to own? Any size, any sector. Just outstanding businesses.

Q: Hello folks,

This is a follow up question to Ross' on March 6 2024.

You didn't answer the second part of Ross' question!

Are there any studies comparing "selling" calls or puts and buying and holding the stocks?

I know intuitively that it depends on stocks! Some are so good for writing calls. Some are good for puts and some for buying and holding! But that is not evidence based! Also a "cop out" answer!

Any studies that you know of?

Q: Hello 5i,
I would like to buy HSAV.ca for a 1 year hold but I’m concerned about the erosion of the .62% premium and
price in a declining rate environment. I appreciate your thoughts. Would you still consider it a buy. It seems to be the only tax efficient HSIA available in Canada so perhaps it will always maintain its demand. Thank you.

Q: A full position is considered to be 5%. So if a family has say 2 tfsa’s of $50k each and an RSP of $100k for total of $200k, would you look at a 5% full position in each account, which would amount to $2500 in each tfsa and $5000 in the RSP, or would you look at 5% based on the household registered total of $10,000 and be ok with a $10,000 hold in 1 RSP account even though in that account its 20% but still only 5% of the family portfolio if you will. Hope this makes some sense.

Q: Put Options betting the stock will go down or Call Options betting the stock will go up.

Do you prefer one over the other?

Thinking of trying both, I'm a 10 year self investor.

Or just continue to buy stock for the long term?

Are there any statistics that prove using Put & Call's perform better than buying and holding stocks?
