Nutrien Ltd. (NTR)
Q: Follow up to my last question - thanks for the answer. Any comments on the sell sequence and timing for ENB, LIF, NTR and TCL.A. I have done pretty well with all of these except TCL.A which is a bit in the red.
Some of these are cyclical, and your guess on when to sell will be better than mine.
Thanks,
Jim
Question:
I have an unregistered account with about 12 CDN blue chip stocks. The purpose of the account is to generate dividend income for the next several decades, while providing slow and steady capital growth. I have taken the decision to exit ENB, LIF, NTR and TCL.A and to increase holdings in AQN, NPI, PMO205, XTR. I know timing will never be perfect, but just looking for some timing guidance due to current market conditions and cyclicality of some of these stocks. Trying to avoid horrible hindsight commentry: that was OBVIOUSLY a poor time to make that change....
Answer:
An easy solution of course is to add one of the four once a month and we would be fine with such a strategy. All four buy proposals will have some sensitivity to rates, and Canada has already indicated rate hikes will pause. The bond market expects rate CUTS in Canada later this year, so finishing purchases in June could end up well.

Q: I hold a small position in NTR (74 shares). It is doing well for me (up $3,000). I would like to enter into a full postion but note that expected earnings will fall for 2023. Zim was doing well due to Covid shipping rates being raised, but soon fell way below the high leaving many with major losses. It may seem that NTR may follow a similar pattern having improved due to results during Covid. As Covid diminishes so will the stock earnings.
Question: Is NTR a buy to increase a position or a sell to scrape whatever earnings and to move on to something else? If moving on please suggest other dividend opportunities in Basic Materials. I am a 77 year old dividend value investor with some growth.

Q: The Nutrien P/E looks way too low. Is that because the learnings are not forward looking? What is the forward looking P/E in the next 12 months?
Q: If you held no current position in NTR but wanted to begin one, would you be inclined to buy before or after earnings are released on February 8? I ask because the stock was clobbered after earnings were released in early November 2022.
I realize this is a timing issue which can be a mug's game but I am still interested in your gut feeling.
Thanks as always for your expertise.

Q: As a new purchase, can you advise which of these three you would recommend and why, please? Thanks, Dan

Q: I sold Nutrien at a much higher price in 2022 with the intention of rebuying if the share price pulled back. While the share price has indeed pulled back, the 50 dma is heading down and the 200 dma has recently turned down. These technicals are giving me pause. I know 5i prefers looking at fundamentals. Considering fundamentals, NTR looks cheap to my inexpert eyes. Would you be comfortable buying now given the fundamentals of the company?
Thank you as always for your expertise.

Q: With a recent news release from NTR saying they want to establish a bigger presence in Brazil, do you think NPK would be a company they would consider for a take out. NPK announced today they are seeking a permit for a rail line.

Q: I have these names as part of my materials sector. Do you think this is a good diversified mix of companies for long term growth? I was thinking of adding in TECK. Would you add TECK to this group or swap one of the names out for TECK? If you had to consolidate to just 3 names, which ones would you pick?

Q: High growth stocks. A recent NP piece by Peter H. advised investors consider these vs. conservative picks coming out of a bear market. "Stocks that used to be 50X sales are now 3X sales and still growing at 50%+...a Bloomberg screen shows 982 companies with 50% sales growth in the next year."
Could you provide 10 Cdn. stocks in this category or better yet provide a link to the Bloomberg screen. Thanks.

Q: Hi Peter and team,
What do you think about addition of fertilizer stocks at this point given we don’t have any exposure following the 5i BE portfolio and the huge arbitrage in Natural Gas prices between NA and Europe and the sidelining of Ukraine as a major agricultural producer?
It feels like a solid opportunity. CF has a yield and is buying back stock.
