Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I'm a fairly unsophisticated investor so your advice has been well worth the price.

I am trying to understand the metrics to better value a company.

The price of some companies like Costco and CSU has soared, but you have mentioned such rises not being a bubble if other metrics like P/E ratio are in line with that. Is that the case for these two companies or are they now over-priced?

Also, you seem to be recommending VRT but the P/E ration on that is around 90. That seems very high.

Q: I have some cash to deploy but am feeling that everything is too expensive amidst the current euphoria.

Do you think it is worth sitting on cash, at least for a while, to see if things settle?

On the other hand, can you recommend 3-5 stocks in Canada and US that are at a good current price.

Also, and please take more points, can you name your top 2 sectors in each country.

Q: Thanks to Earl for his recent note on how to go about selling PDYPF shares (?) through BMO InvestorLine.

However I'm still confused as to what the Flutter Entertainment transaction is actually all about.

Is the Fan Duel listing a spin out from Flutter and a completely separate listing? Ie, is this a choice between owning Flutter shares or Fan Duel shares on the NYSE?

Is it a choice between what exchanges you want to hold your shares on, NYSE or London?

If the Fan Duel listing is a spin out, do PDYPF share holders get some Flutter shares and some Fan Duel shares?

Finally, if it's a choice between one or the other, which one do you favour, Flutter or Fan Duel?

Thanks,
Pete

Q: My 22 year old son received a $100,000 gift from his grandfather on his birthday. His TFSA and FHSA are fully funded so this money will go to funding his first unregistered account. The S&P 500 has shown an average annual return in excess of 13% over the past 15 years and over 20% in 2023. As such, it is tempting to just put the full amount in an S&P ETF, but having come off a 20% year gives one pause. What is your recommendation in this case?

Q: When 5i answers a question like this are the 3 top picks listed in priority order?

Q: Hello 5i
Do you have any recent information or feelings about Novavax. I don't know if they have other exciting things in their vaccine pipeline or if they just missed the boat? Fortunately I'm "asking for a friend" looking at the chart NVAX has made money disappear for 3 years at an extraordinary pace.
Thanks as always! You have been a great resource !

Q: It appears that Devon Energy has expressed an interest in purchasing ERF. Could you look at potential synergies for this deal and provide any additional views (eg. any other potential suitors?).

Many thanks.
