High Interest Savings Account ETF (HISA)
Q: Hi,
I was surprised to learn yesterday that a T3 form was provided to me from by bank for holding Purpose High Interest Savings Fund (PSA). It says there is a minuscule return of capital. I thought PSA would only provide interest as reported on a T5.
I went to the PSA website and sure enough, there is a ROC and has been since 2013. Do you know if this is typical of these high interest savings account ETFs and if there is another fund that is similar to PSA without the ROC component?
Thank you.
Michael

Q: Hello. I was going to ask you about MSTY:US, one of YieldMax ETFs. It creates synthetic long exposure, then writes covered calls to generate income. I specifically wanted to ask you about how distributions would be treated from a tax perspective as a Canadian. The distributions are options premiums. So would the distributions then be treated as capital gains, or as US dividends? I assume there would also be a 15% US withholding tax.
When I entered the symbol to ask this question, I discovered that MSTY:CA is a Canadian equivalent, although they only have 50% exposure. Do you know anything about the company Harvest? I had never heard of them. Are they an established and reputable company? How would distributions from MSTY:CA be treated from a tax perspective? Thanks for your help

Q: Knowing that this may not be your area of expertise but if YOU had to get a mortgage in the next three months or so, what terms would you go for? Expect to pay it back in 6-8 years... Thanks in advance.
In addition to my previous question, I would appreciate reasons to your answer. Thank you.

Q: Bank of America downgraded Telus to neutral from Buy. The reasons are excessive leverage and the dividend exceeding cash flow. The stock is down 5%.
Three questions:
1. Do you agree with the assessment of the analyst ?
2. The Analyst making the assessment is assigned only one star on a scale of five according to my broker. Does the fact that the analyst is assigned only one star makes his prediction less reliable?
3. What is your recommendation going forward for Telus ? Sell or hold ? Is there more downside risk? Although the dividend was increased twice in 2024 is there a risk of an imminent dividend cut ?
Thank you as always for your insight.
Please deduct as many credits as deemed necessary.

Q: I’m finally back in black on Algonquin Power. Invested in it for the USD dividend that still qualified for the dividend tax credit. Would you hold or get out? thx

Global X Marijuana Life Sciences Index ETF (HMMJ $7.19)
-
Cronos Group Inc. (CRON $2.84)
Q: Hello,
What do you think of Knight's results? In the cannabis space, would be a good idea to start a position in Aurora and Cronos Group. Both seem to have a decent PE (based on yahoo) or is still too early given US may not legalize it. Alternatively, do you think it is best to go with HMMJ but many companies in the ETF do not have profits so am wondering best way to enter the space.. much appreciated.

Q: What do you think of debentures and do you think this is a good way to possibly hold as a proxy for ones bond side of your portfolio? How are they different from preferred stock? Do you think PBH are a good choice of company to hold them with? I have cash coming out of GIC's and am looking for a better rate now that GIC interest has gone down. Is the Div of 5.5% safe and is it considered interest or div for Canadian taxes? Is it good to get in or wait with a new issue regarding the price- do they tend to fluctuate with the market? Thanks so much.
Q: Hi Guys!
I see CCJ is once again inching up (about 10% in a few weeks).
Could you give me your thoughts on the company right now and Uranium? Do think it’s ready to pop back up to what many say will be in the 70.00 US range?
Ok thank you!

Q: Dear Peter et al:
A "Drill down" from the top type of a question!
In Energy sector, these three things seem to be important.
a. Pay down debt.
b. Keep paying healthy dividend or even increase it.
c. Buy back shares.
Recently Cole Smead came on a podcast and clearly laid out his case for his preference to invest in companies that buy back shares. (In the Money by Amber Kanwar, erstwhile BNN Bloomberg Marketcall host).
What is your take on this? What are the 3 companies in the Energy sector that you like using Share buy backs as the metric?
Thanks in advacnce.
P.S. Hope we see you Peter on Amber Kanwar's In the Money podcast. It seems to be getting some traction now.
