Q: Regardless of sector, please suggest 5 or so each Cdn and US holdings that would expect to average an 8%+ return per year including dividend and capital appreciation (can be company or ETF, but for ETF should consider fee) for 10 year hold. Thank-you!
Q: I am currently doing my quarterly rebalancing and need to up my US holdings. My current US holdings include in APPL, BRK.B, XOM, JPM, MCD, MSFT, and V. What are your current favorite longer term buys in the US ?

Q: Once upon a time…..(1990) I bought shares of TRP. Many events around TRP since then, including recent SOBO spinoff, but I still own some of my original shares. You might be too young for this, but in 1994, a change was made to Capital Gains Exemptions law. We could lock Capital Gains as of Fev22,1994, in filing Form T664, and claim them later by increasing ACB. I still have my personal notes for this!. By any chance would you -or your subscribers- know if CRA keeps records as far as this? CRA web site shows records for 2012+. In 1994, tax returns and any other documents were made on paper of course. Thanks again.
Q: As a follow-up to my previous question, why would higher inflation / interest rates in the USA cause the price to go down of XBB shares which hold 100% Canadian government, provincial, and corporate bonds?
Q: Sunlife Financial has had a nice increase (+20% since I last purchased). IS Sunlife generally a hold, ell or buy? The other financial I hold is Royal bank. Given decreasing in interest rates and potential impact on banks is it a good time to switch to a bank hold? Which may be the second choice if that is the case?
Q: Any reason KXS is down $5 at this writing? There was an open letter yesterday to shareholders from a firm that owns 1.4% of the company questioning company performance. Is this the reason? What do you make of KXS performance? What do you see over the next 6-12 months?
Q: Based on the presentation on their website the dividend for SOBO is anticipated to be $2.76/yr which would equate to around 9%. This seems like a really safe buying opportunity……. Thoughts? How did they determine the spin off price to result in such a high dividend?
I own 6 REITS, 3 are residential. Inter rent has not performed as well as Killam and CAP in the last year. I hesitate to consolidate by deleting it and increasing the other two if there have been reasons for this that may reverse but do not want to keep it if it is a value trap.
Q: Hello, on August 15th you answered a question by Derek about this company. Feel free to abridge this quote within your response, pasted below. I don't fully understand your response, as it seems to indicate that TSU will grow faster, but why would you say that IFC is more balanced? Does this mean that IFC should actually grow more over time, or that it will grow less but is more stable? Thank you very much.
Original answer about growth:
IFC (property and casualty insurance and auto insurance) - consensus growth estimate over the next few years 6%
TSU (specialty insurance) - consensus growth estimate over the next few years 10%-12%
TSU has the best growth, as the company reinvested the majority of its earnings back, and volume growth in TSU’s recent quarters is quite healthy. TSU has the strongest growth, but we think IFC could be the most balanced name between capital returns and growth.
Q: Good day,
In a recent announcement, EQX indicated that US$130 million conv debt is being converted into equity, and it talks about a secondary offering for the same amount - Q. Is that secondary offering to cover the debt, or is it in addition to the shares being issued for the debt conversion?
Thanks.
Q: I only own two REITs in my entire portfolio - GRT.UN and DIR.UN, and both are down sustainably (25% and 15%, respectively). Do you see any lights at the of these two tunnels? I plan to sell both for tax losses if there are no chances of these two turning around before December. Your advice please.
