Q: With regards the question asked by EARL on ECN stock, what would be the result if you own the stock in a TFSA (like I do)with no taxes payable. I am thinking of keeping the stock no matter what and purchasing more stock with the dividend issued. Is this a good idea?

Q: Good afternoon!
This is one of Dorr Capital's funds that invest in mortgages (assumedly higher risk), and are speculating (pun intended!) a return of 7.5% annually, with distributions monthly.
The management fee is 1.25% (Series "A") or .85% (Series "F"). There is a cost to redeem on 30 days notice of 2% if in 1 year or 1% if in the second year.
I don't think this is much of a good idea, but was wondering:
1) Your thoughts on this specific investment?
2) Would there be any equities you could steer me towards that do this type of investment but without the management fees or the slow redemptions?
Thanks!

Q: I am trying to steer my and my husband's TFSA's more toward growth. The stocks listed are some of the stocks in our TFSA's that I am considering swapping out in favour of growth-oriented stocks on my watchlist. Can I get your opinion? Do you think that any of the listed stocks have enough growth potential to belong in a growth-oriented TFSA?
Thank you, Doris

Q: Hi 5i,
For the equity part of my portfolio I'm looking to diversify internationally. As a percentage of my total equity portfolio I'm thinking 4%VXUS 2%DLS and 2%DIM. Is 8% international stocks a reasonable number for a conservative investor and is there maybe a better way to adjust the percentages? The equity portfolio will be rebalanced yearly. The bonds and cash part of the portfolio have not been included this is strictly equity.
Thanks

Q: I am looking to offset some capital gains received this year from PEO and PHO (thanks!). Currently I have the following holdings in a loss position, in order of dollars down: TDOC, TV, XBC, HAL, XEG, NFI, SQ, TECK.B, XTC, WELL, ENGH, PLTR. I would need to sell the first six to fully offset the gain, or could sell more if using those in a smaller loss position. How would you rank these holdings in order of selling, and which of these would you look to buy back after 30 days (if any)? Note that these are held within a broad portfolio that I am also looking to consolidate.
Q: I have done some calculations for me re selling or holding ECN that others may be interested in doing. My ACB for ECN is $3.75/sh and a sale at $11 would result in a $7.25 capital gain/$3.63 taxable and about $1.81/share taxes to be paid.
If I hold, the $7.50 dividend would result in my ACB going to zero (3.75-4.15) and a $0.40 capital gain and a 0.10/share tax liability plus the $3.35 special dividend would likely require about 32% tax payable (AB) or $1.07. So total tax payable by keeping the shares for me is about $1.17/share. Since I want to own the ECN shares after this, it is cheaper for me to hold the shares than to sell and rebuy. Interesting to me that my ACB will be zero after this. I hope this helps others do the math.

Q: I've held BNS for 5+ years as a core position in my portfolio. I've noticed it's relative underperformance compared to the other Canadian Banks and I was wondering if you could shed some light on the reasons behind this? Are they simply not meeting their growth expectations or is there another fundamental reason? Thanks
Q: Can you give your updated comments on Gmg graphene stock price movement, their recent partnership with Bosch, to further production of this New age battery. How would you define this company? The space their in? It seem to have their hands in other interesting spaces such as graphene coatings for HVAC market…is this the NEXT BIG THING? Martinrea has already bought shares in NanoXplore (GRA) and the etf/fund industry hasn’t started throwing buckets of money in the space as of yet but if the imperfect lithium batter gets replaced GMG Graphene, it seems like a no brainer with it’s better charging power/capacity and the fact that aluminum and graphene are readily available AND recyclable. Do you agree with my assessment? So far I’ve more than doubled my money….seems like longterm this is the space to be in.

Q: Thanks Peter. Your services have been very educational and rewarding. Had a good year. This is my first year of subscription and I just upgraded to the full Investor suite services. As the end of the year, I am reflecting on the investments done in the year. I seek you opinion to opinion some of those as under. Position size or Industry allocation is not an issue. Time horizon is long 4+. No tax consequences and have patience; there is no need to raise cash
A. Stocks with above average returns-
ATZ 62%, TOI 72%, SIS 39%, TFII 19%, DOO 19%, NVEI 49%, WSP 32%, SHOP 19%, GSY 72%, U 106%
Do you recommend continuing to hold all of them? Would you consolidate sell some and add to some?
Would you endorse Investing new fund in 1 or 2 of them at current price to go to full position
B. Under performing stocks (loss/down)-
AT 56%, CTS 8%, EGLX 40%, LSPD 8%, MRS 69%, QST 35%, XBC 52%, Well 26%, AMGN 10%
Do you still have the conviction in these stocks? If yes which are best 3 and why? Do you recommend selling some of them or adding to some of them?
Again, thanks for your excellent services and deduct as many credits as appropriate

Q: Thoughts on recent filing and how it may effect share price over the short & long term please? Is this to raise more capital from foreign holders already on the board? Seems very dilutive for shareholders.
Q: Agilent has pulled back from recent highs - what are your overall thoughts of the company and prospects? Thanks.
