Q: I recently put together a spreadsheet that pulls together all of the Canadian equity holdings that my wife and I have in our registered and non-registered accounts.

This is what we have in the Oil & Gas Sector:

• the three majors SU, CVE and CNQ
• the three pipes TRP, PPL and ENB
• and an assortment of other companies TOU, WCP, ARX, ALA, TPZ, MDI, MER

I’d like to trim this back to 6-8 holdings and, as well, have more of a balanced profile. What would you recommend? And if there are different O&G stocks you’d sub in, please recommend as well.

Q: I’ve recently subscribed to 5i, and appreciate all the good information that you have on your website.

A question: how do you choose which stocks to research and which to not research? In your model portfolios, you have included a number of big-name stocks (BCE, L, TD, BN, amongst others) that aren’t rated. I understand they are included in your model portfolios to provide sector diversification, but would I be correct to infer that if you rated them they wouldn’t likely be “A” stocks?

A somewhat related question: your Income Model Portfolio includes BCE, CNQ, FTS, H and TD (amongst others), all non-rated, but your Balanced Equity Model Portfolio does not. Does this mean that although you view these stocks as being good dividend-payers, you also think they have limited upside?

Q: Hi there: I have been retired for 5 years, in my late 60's. In which order of the above will you buy, given that a few of them are in their all time high. Could u rank them from high (10) to Low (1), and what entry price make sense to you. From a dividend return point of view, and from a Growth point of view. Take as many credit as you see fit. Q: Which company has the most upside.

Q: I am considerably overweight in energy. Was looking to ride it out for seasonal strength until April before cutting back, but the whole tariff question has got me nervous so will trim soon. I have close to an equal weight in both these stocks. CNQ is pretty solid but I think VRN has more upside over the short term. Between CNQ and VRN, which would you pare down the most? Cheers.

Q: Hi, could you please rate these companies for a riff account. My goal would be dividend, growth and stability in down market. I have money for one company. (Would buying U.S. be beneficial?)

I have several energy infrastructure holdings but no actual producers.
Do you think now (read Trump) would be a good time to purchase on the production side?
I was thinking SU or CNQ.
Are there others you would favour - energy or otherwise.

Q: These are a list of oil stock I have, and I've heard on BNN, That the oil stocks could go to $40.00 - $60.00. I would appreciate what your thought are on oil in general.

Q: A member's question regarding CAD companies that would be most negatively affected by the effect of a Trump victory on Canadian co's with large exposure to the US highlighted the list I included above. I can possibly understand why LNR and MG would be negatively affected, but why should Canadian oil producers (and a pipeline co which doesn't compete with a US pipeline Co's route) also be affected by a commodity covered by NAFTA 2 which was approved under the previous Trump administration?

Q: I have all these stocks in my RIFF and they are all up since purchase. I have $75.00 in my RIFF, would you add a new stock, what would you suggest?

Q: Between these 2 stocks, both with good growth and dividends, would you prefer for a long term hold. Are their dividend taxed differently in Canada?

Q: Dear Peter and team,

Thank you for answering my earlier question on heavy oil and suggesting your picks. Doing my "homework", I see that these three are cross listed in the US and Canada. NYSE/TSX.
As I plan to hold them for a sometime I plan to write covered calls to augment the dividends. (One of your favourite strategies if I recall.)

With this in mind, may I ask you if it is more prudent buy these in NYSE as the options market is more vibrant on NYSE? Or stick to TSX? I understand that there is a currency risk if I buy them in USD. As the will be in our Regd accounts not too worried about tax consequences.

Q: Hello, With the supply-demand dispersion caused by governments pushing clean energy what is your outlook for growth in CNQ over the next few years? The company has increased their dividend last seven years to a healthy 4+%. As a US citizen will I pay taxes on the dividend? Thank you
