Q: Good morning 5i
You seem to have a lot of confidence in Google. I wonder, though, what unexpected developments could come along and derail Google? For instance Search is a big component for selling advertisement. But, since Chat gp has been developed, I generally direct any questions I have to it, rather than to Google. It does the searching for me. If something like that became widespread I imagine it could be very bad for Google. There may be other detrimental developments, too. I don’t imagine you have a magic answer for this other than just to keep an eye open. But I was wondering whether things like this would dampen your enthusiasm for Google and move you to hold less?

Q: Hello 5i,

We are in sync with the theory that hardware stocks will slow down and software will be the next phase. Which stocks from this group would you purchase today if not owned. We will assume that those not mentioned may be purchased on a pull-back. Of the list, are there any stocks that you would swap out for another stock?

WMT, NVDA, VRT, FTNT, GDDY, EVLV, SPT, UEC, FFIV, PYPL, SYM, BMY, LLY, APPF, ARM, MNDY, ORCL

Q: I have approximately $70k cash in my TFSA account that I would like to invest before the end of the year. I currently have the above stocks in my TFSA. My investments in Lightspeed and Unity have taken a big hit (70 to 80% loss) since purchasing these stocks. I understand that I cannot claim losses on investments in my TFSA account. Would you suggest selling off my investments in Lightspeed and Unity and reinvesting these funds? As noted above, I have cash in my TFSA to be invested. Please rank my current TFSA holdings for additional investment considering a 5 to 10 year hold. Thank you for your expertise and best wishes for the Holiday Season.

Q: This Friday, BAM shareholders (but no other Brookfield entity, correct?) will vote on becoming US-domiciled, and, as-such, eligible for inclusion in US indices.

Assuming approval, (a) should this change catalyze an expansion of its P/E multiple (or is that already priced-in), and (b) should this change catalyze, indirectly, a proportional expansion for BN?

Q: Hello. I would like to add to an answer given today about selling TD Bank shares with significant capital gain and Tax mitigation

Asked by Dave: "Can you suggest any way to mitigate/reduce any tax hit if I were to dump my TD shares?"


If an investor is so inclined, it is beneficial to Donate shares where upon donation there is zero capital gains tax and the full amount of the share sale value is considered a charitable donation.

With annual charitable donations, I have been running off gains this way for years.

Q: I hold both of these in my TFSA. BN for its growth potential - BAM for both dividend appreciation and some, albeit modest growth. I am uncertain about my options in 2025 if the plans of converting BAM to a U.S. domiciled corp. go through. Should I be transferring BAM to my taxable portfolio? Selling BAM and adding to the BN? or ? ? This somewhat weird query is not so much a question as a request for reasoned tho'ts. on options and their possible implications. Q: A few weeks ago you wrote: "REITs are quite difficult right now due to how weak the housing market has performed and recent news that the Government of Canada will slow immigration." I find this interesting as from CMHC "Canada needs about 3.5 million additional housing units by 2030 to restore affordability." Overall Canada only had 240,267 housing starts in 2023. So there is still a massive shortfall as the 3.5M works out to about 580,000 per year out to 2030. The numbers don't align with the lower prices seen in REITs. Thoughts? Thanks

Just reviewing your balance portfolio and I noticed that your highest conviction stocks are csu, dsg, shop and wsp, all around 6%. Can I assume that you would recommend these stocks for 2025 at this percentage of a balance portfolio?

Q: Would like to increase my Google holdings, I have the problem in buying goog outright in a tfsa or buying cdr . I have never bought a cdr and ask would this be good idea or should I just buy the US Google . What are the pros and cons of cdr and what are the best way to buy cdr? I have goog in a cash account but my tfsa would require selling existing securities .
