Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Given the recent price jumps in some of the US recommendations you have been making, can you give me your top 5 long-term holds in terms of their current price?

Thanks

PS. I understand your timelines, but if you could answer quickly because tomorrow morning will be my last buying opportunity for the next week.

Q: Hello, conservative investor and thinking about adding an oil and gas ETF into my portfolio and am looking at XEG vs HEE. Now, I know HEE writes covered calls, so I was surprised when looking at 5 and 10 year returns that HEE's return was lower than XEG. Conversely, in up years, HEE had higher returns than XEG. I would have expected this to the be the opposite. Are you able to say why this has been the case? Thank you.

Q: Hello 5i,

In our registered accounts we have BEP.UN, BEPC, FTS, AQN, BAM.A, BIPC, WSP. All of these stocks performed very well for 2+ years thanks to 5i. We trimmed each of the stocks to 1%-2% positions between August and October when prices were elevated with the intention of repurchasing if they dropped. With rising interest rates and inflation now it may not make sense to repurchase. Would it be viable to:
Retain one of FTS (2% position) or BEP.UN (2%) or sell both?
Sell AQN, BIPC,
Retain BAM.A and WSP, and increase each to 3% or 4% with the proceeds from the sale of the other stocks?
or Any other suggestions?

Thank you

Q: When I was awarded shares of PMZ I entered them into the program with a book value at the current share price, but in reality, I did not pay for the shares. Conversely the HR.UN became a 20% + loss. I'm wondering if this is okay or should the PMZ shares have gone in at 0 book value or the HR value be reduced to accurately reflect the performance of the portfolio.

Q: I started looking at NVO and I saw that you said it had a PE of 37X in answer to a question about it in December (2021). Yet TD (webbroker) shows earnings of about $50 going forward and not much less in the past year. So i was wondering where you got the number of 37X - should it be closer to 10X? What am I missing?

Q: Hi, One of my friends who is constructing a house told me costs of 2x4’s have gone up by five fold recently.. Is that reflected in the stock prices of companies like West Fraser? Is it too late to get in?
Also what are your thoughts on Aritizia going into this tough environment of higher interest rates and inflation..Will apparel companies typically prosper in such an environment? Thanks.

Q: Hi!

In The Globe recently:
"On March 4, chair of the board of directors Bill Holland bought 50,000 shares at a price per share of $20.20 for an account in which he has indirect ownership (WH Corp.), increasing this particular account’s position to 1,325,000 shares. The cost of this purchase exceeded $1-million.

Last month, we reported that Mr. Holland invested over $4.4-million in shares of CI with the purchase of 200,000 shares between Feb. 3 and Feb. 23.

Mr. Holland is CI’s former chief executive officer.

The company pays its shareholders a quarterly dividend of 18 cents per share or 72 cents per share yearly, equating to a current annualized yield of approximately 3.7 per cent."

What would you value CI right now on a per share basis?
Given the present investing environment would full position be a good idea?
Is management trustworthy and effective?
Is the insider buying significant enough to copycat?

Thank you as always!

Q: Hi 5i, After close to a 40% drop, I’ve initiated a position in NVDA through CDRs. My avgerage cost is $22.75 as of today. I assume after this pop in an oversold market, the stock will retrace further as rates go up and earnings and the North American economies go down. I plan to increase my holdings at target prices in the underlying security. Is this a sound strategy?

Q: Hi 5i: I am considering getting back into some Canadian tech stocks. I would be pleased if you would provide me with your three best picks. A combination of cash on the balance sheet and moderate growth would be the criteria. I am a long term investor. Thank you always for providing great insights on investment decisions.

Q: Some small charities don't have broker accounts so you can use : https://www.canadahelps.org/fr/
They take a small commission and give the net results to your favorite charity and you get the tax receipt from Canadahelps. I used it 2 times and works just fine.

Q: Further to questions regarding capitulation, and if today gains hold, would you consider we have reached a bottom on this correction. I have been patiently waiting for a entry point to get started with some of the losses incurred.
Thanks
