Q: Good Morning. I have US dollars that I want to invest for my recently born grandchildren so there is a 15-20 year timeframe. Please advise 5 ideas, US $ stocks or etfs, and rank in order from low risk to high. I will likely purchase a mix and compare how they perform over time. Thank you.

Q: I am very interested in BCE. Considering my investing history, this is not a good sign.

Would you tell me the intrinsic value of BCE?

Surely, $30 is undervaluing the company by a lot?

I know 5i looks for growth stocks, but I would like to know if BCE would serve
as solid dividend paying business, with a good chance for share price increase.

Basically, if 5i were to issue a report on BCE, what would be the letter grade you would give it?

Q: I know there is overlap with these 2 ETFs
Would it still make sense to own both, or is there another more complimentary Canadian Hedged US ETF to hold with either of those ETFs?

Q: I am interested in the divergence in performance between BN and its associated companies including BEP.UN. I own BEP.UN and BIP.UN both of which have a history of strongly outperforming BN. More recently they have fallen off while BN has fluorished. Can you comment and what would be your advice on switching some holdings into BN?

We would very much appreciate your view on this situation, which seems quite unfair to us.
We invested in the TD USD money market fund, TDB2915. At the end of 2024 we received our regular monthly drip and the quantity of units rose accordingly. We also saw a transaction for a much larger drip but there were no numbers put in the quantity column. TD told us that the fund had a Special Distribution. But instead of paying the Special Distribution as cash into our account, the fund instead reduced the cost basis of our shares. TD said that they could either pay out the Special Distribution or reduce the cost basis, and that they chose the latter. TDB2915 has a fixed price of USD 10 per share. Our understanding of what we were told is below by way of an example:
Initial Investment: USD $10,000 with a purchase 1,000 shares of TDB2915 at USD $10 per share.
Special Distribution: USD $2 per share
Instead of receiving USD $2,000 as cash, the fund reduces the cost basis by USD $2 per share
So the Adjusted Cost Basis after the Special Distribution is USD $10 minus USD $2 = USD $8 per share, and so for 1,000 shares the ACB = USD $8,000
When the shares are sold there is a gain of USD $2,000 to report because of the now lower ACB. But we didn’t receive any additional shares.
Putting the tax issues aside, the example shows that the shareholder is no further ahead having not receive the additional USD $2,000 Special Distribution.
Are we missing something? Is this legal?

Q: Some ETF's collect dividends from their underlying assets, but also employ yield-enhancement strategies. We might expect that such ETF's would account their distributions as some combination of 'pass through' dividends plus (for example) return-of-capital, but it is apparent that some ETF's retain essentially all dividends, and account distributions as (for example) return-of-capital alone. I can see how this policy might be attractive in the short- to medium-term - or even in the long-term, depending on the rate of inflation, and capital gains rules - but a notably cost of this policy is to deprive the investor of the considerable benefits of the dividend tax credit.

Is there a rule-of-thumb one can apply, here, to evaluate the implied trade-off, or is this the sort of thing the determination of which needs an accounting degree? Further (and without implying any judgment), can the ETF itself benefit from the dividend tax credit, or is the credit only available to individual taxpayers?

Q: With the aftermath of the California disaster, which companies could be involved in all levels of rebuilding those areas ( Engineering, construction, cleanup, etc.).
