Someone introduced us Principal protected notes (PPNs), which offer 100% principal protection and attractive return on investment. PPNs is new to us so we wonder comparing with bonds from risk-reward perspective, which one is prefered income investment vehicle.

Q: Does your January12 answer to " John" re BPF.UN AW.UN and PZA imply a negative view of BPF.UN? What growth do you see for it ?

Q: Report on Business in the Globe and Mail had an article entitled "How lenders skirt Canada' mortgage rules" in today's paper (January 12, 2017). The first two sentences of the artilce state: Canada’s subprime mortgage providers are increasingly teaming up with unregulated rivals to sidestep rules designed to clamp down on risky lending.

The results of these partnerships are so-called "bundled" loans, which pair a primary mortgage with a second loan from unregulated groups called mortgage investment corporations (MICs).

It later states that HCG uses this bundling technique.

Do you think this article is being fair to HCG? Could HCG be at risk if it is following this practice? Will the shorts find this another reason to put HCG in a negative light?

Q: A recent question on the 3 restaurant royalty stocks about future growth covers your expectations for 2 of the 3 but omits BPF.UN. In your last report Dec. 2015 when the stock was at $17 states "we think BPF looks slightly undervalued but not by a great deal."

Does this imply that BPF at $23 is now fully valued or even overvalued and that holders can expect no further future growth? Thanks, J.

Q: Hi, i'am thinking of selling Bep.un, I read an article saying it has a $33 target,and is paying out over 100% on AFFO,it also goes on to say because of its unique structure it has numerous conflicts of intrest ,therefore is a weak position for its unit holders.
Just wondering if you somewhat agree and if I sold,what two or three replacements could I buy with a good dividend.

Q: ALA-tsx was halted yesterday, Thursday, Jan. 12, around news reported in "The Wall Street Journal" (the only place I could find info at 4:00 pm..)

"Canada’s AltaGas in Talks to Combine With D.C. Utility WGL
Deal could value the parent of Washington’s natural-gas utility at $5 billion to $6 billion"


Do you have more info or thoughts? I am not a subscriber to the Journal so could not read the complete article.

I suspect this will be good for both companies.

I hope ALA does more dividend increases & wonder what will happen to ALA's DRIP/SPP plan I have been in for years.

Q: Re form 1135. Are US ETF holdings exempt when held in RRIF and TFSA accounts when calculating amounts?

Q: I was contemplating purchasing shares of AQN until I saw a January 6, 2017 report by S&P Capital IQ that rates the company a "Strong Sell". This appears to fly in the face of the "Buy" rating by a number of other analysts. Is one negative report enough to give you pause?

I realize you do not cover USA stocks and may want to take a pass...I will not be offended. Iteris has just hit a new high and I am wondering if I should sell or hold for a while. So in your eyes can you give me the big picture. Does it appear to have new legs and could possibly run another 10-20% in the coming months?

Q: What are thoughts on Q1 results for Caldwell Partners? It seems cost are more in line to deliver stronger profits going forward and a sustainable dividend. The Company maintains a very good balance sheet and management and directors have been buying stock. Do you think the stock price today is very inexpensive?

Q: Peter, I'm interested in increasing my gold exposure in registered accounts for diversification purposes and would appreciate your latest take on the gold royalty company Sandstorm (SSL-T, SAND-N) in the wake of today's announcement of record production in Q4 2016. I have heard good things about its CEO Nolan Watson.
