Q: Can you please help me with calculating NextEra Energy’s payout ratio. I have been using the annual dividend per share divided by the adjusted EPS. So for 2023, I expect it to be between 60% and 63%, as they expect adjusted earnings to be in the $2.98 to $3.13 range. And they are paying $0.4675 per quarter or $1.87 annually. If I use EPS before adjustments, the payout ratio jumps, and if I use cashflow from operations it drops. Is adjusted EPS the best number to be using? I keep reading that NEE has a conservative payout ratio, would you agree? Thanks for your help.

Q: CJ announced Q2 Financial & Operating results. I am confused that Prod Vol only dropped 700 boe of about 22000 boe. But the Revenue dropped 40% compared to 2022 Q2 along with other financial components. I am surprised with such mismatch but market seems to ignore it. Please review and advise what am I missing here.

Q: I have owned PKI for 10 years and have done OK but now am building a case to sell. I see PKI as a company whose assets spans an oil refinery to M&M frozen foods with oil distribution and convenience stores in between. Now is facing significant capex to add EV charging stations and facing more competition in this area with the announcement that the major auto companies are to build out charging stations across Canada.

Please shot holes into my thesis. Am looking to replace with EIF, your thoughts on this company would be appreciated. Thanks. Derek

Can you please suggest Canadian-listed ETFs for the bond portion of a long-term portfolio? I'm interested in diversification.

Thanks,

Chris

Q: We hear a lot about which companies might do well with AI, but we don't hear much about who does not. Surely there must be losers, perhaps companies that currently offer services that will be turned over to cheaper bots as AI progresses through the economic system? Your thoughts are appreciated.

Q: Hi Peter,

In a long-term account (20+ years), could you please describe what asset allocation you would choose (including %)? Would you stick to stocks and bonds and gold, or are there any other asset classes you'd want exposure to?

Thanks as always!

Q: I have a significant capital loss on TIXT. I know you're not tax experts, but do you think TIXT is sufficiently independent from T such that if I take my tax loss on TIXT and put the proceeds in T until the 30 days is up before I reinvest in TIXT that CRA would allow the original tax loss? Thank you for all you do. John

Q: Hi 5i,
I've owned VMC for a long time, long enough for it to have lost much of what I initially put into it, and the loss has been enough that there didn't seem to be any reason to sell to realize on what little was left.
So I still own it and now that it's showing some signs of life, and I wonder if there is anything sparking that other than the recently announced deal with Lafarge to supply a couple of electrified trucks - is there any justifiable reason to be optimistic that VMC might pick itself up off the floor, dust itself off and generate some return for long suffering owners such as myself?
I look forward to your thoughts.
Thanks!
Peter

Q: Hi. I’m thinking of investing 2 to 4% of my portfolio in crypto as a diversifier: half in Bitcoin and half in Ethereum. But for a number of reasons I don’t want to invest directly myself, I’m thinking ETFs might be a good option. Have you done some research on Canadian Bitcoin ETFs and Ethereum ETFs? Which ETF for each coin would you recommend? Do you know which ones purchase the crytos directly? Or do they use future contracts, which I understand when they are rolled over causes slippage in the price of the ETF versus the underlying Bitcoin. Also, in the consideration is which one has the best MER? And final consideration which one has the best tracking error. Could you tell the best ETF for both Bitcoin and Ethereum, and why. Or are there better options in the US? Or do you think it is just a bad strategy overall?
