Q: Hi Folks,
I am looking to re-invest this quarters dividends in my RRSP account. Of the four mentioned above, which would be the best to add to at this time and why.

Q: Hi, CDN Banks continue to get hammered everyday, with CM taking the biggest one day hit at 4.2%. Not sure, if it's all the investors' fear about recession hitting the banking sector hard, specially to more " Canadian " Banks, like CIBC, due to large mortgage and personal lending book. We are in a Capital Loss situation with BNS and CM in our Non regd account. Does it make sense to book the loss and wait for signals from BOC/FED to re enter the positions. What is your belief on CDN bank earnings - Could it hit the stock prices even more ? Never thought that a 20% ownership in CDN banks could cause pain. Thanks

Q: Good morning,
I sell call and put options about a month out. I know I once asked you whether it is wise to hold off if there is an earnings call coming up before expirary. I couldn't find that question and answer, though, and instead of spending the morning I am asking it again. I also look at the dividend dates but i don't think it is a good idea to sell a call if an ex dividend date is coming up.

Q: I'm down 33% on TXF in an unregistered account.

For tax loss harvesting would ZWT be considered an acceptable proxy for TXF by Revenue Canada? If they are too similar, what do you feel would be an acceptable proxy?

Alternatively, if there isn't an acceptable proxy would 5i suggest leaving the proceeds in "cash" on the basis that it is doubtful that TXF would increase enough in 30 days to offset the tax gain?

Q: Thy announced a sale of their 20% interest in the US multi-res portfolio for 315 million. The book value from their last annual report was 179 million so the book value was only 52% of the fmv. The use of funds to pay down debt and the evidence that the book value of the company is likely seriously discounted seems to make this company's shares a compelling value.

Q: Hi, A large volume day for a relatively thin trader, including a block trade of 123,300 shares, Today. Lot of interest from Pershing Securities Ltd... Stock opens and closes practically unchanged, but a lot of activity with almost 15% intraday fluctuation. between $71.50 to $82. Any ideas/hints/suspicions ? If you have a sizable position, as a Portfolio Manager, would you be intrigued ? Thank You

Q: I am looking to retire in the next year, and positioning our portfolio more toward income.

Within the utilities sector we held AQN, BEP.UN, BIP.UN and CPX at close to equal weights 3.1-3.3% each (market value).

I recently sold AQN at a 20% tax loss and initiated a new position in FTS (yielding 4.25% after it's big drop). This will be a long term position.

I'm up approx 50% in CPX and even on BIP.UN.

I'm currently carrying a 16% loss on BEP.UN, and am thinking of selling it for a tax loss (I have significant realized capital gains to offset).

I'm considering either splitting the proceeds between BIP, CPX and FTS; or waiting to sell BEP after the 30 day period on AQN has passed, repurchasing it to regain the lost dividends and for diversification.

From recent questions I understand that AQN's dividend is likely safe, and is considered sufficiently different from FTS to support owning both. I like that it is at 2019 levels, and think there is a good possibility it may reward a patient investor. Is debt a concern?

Which course of action would 5i recommend, and why?
1. Sell BEP at a tax loss and split the funds between BIP, CPX and FTS; or
2. Sell BIP at a tax loss and repurchase AQN,
3. Or is there another course of action that you'd recommend?

Q: Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPM has put a scare into me. Earlier this year, Dimon had asked investors to brace for an economic "hurricane". Due to runaway inflation, big interest rates hikes, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the unknown effects of the Federal Reserve's quantitative tightening policy, he is predicting some kind of recession six to nine months from now. Dimon said the S&P 500 could fall by "another easy 20%" from the current levels, with the next 20% slide likely to "be much more painful than the first. Yikes.

Can you give your perspective on his predictions, please.

Q: I am looking for the "safest" dividend paying stocks to add to the above list that will help me weather the recession that according to most commentators will last well into 2023.

Q: hi,
BNS is now trading below November 2013 ( as far as I can see, correct me if I'm wrong ). could you do a quick comparison of the company at each time, illustrating valuation metrics/growth prospects etc.? BNS is now down more than 30% from the recent top-are forward earnings expectations now down 30% from the top, or more/less than 30%? Lastly, do you have any educated guess as to where the bottom is for this stock?
