Q: Thank you for for answer yesterday about setting up my parent's investments. To summarize, they are very conservative, above 80 years old, and looking for safety and income.
I would now like to ask you about the distribution of the equity component of the investments (composing only 17% of the total, the rest being in bonds, preferred, and GICs). Those below are all in equal weight. What do you thing?
BEP.UN, BCE, BNS, CM, CU, ENB, TRP
XHC for healthcare exposure
IWO for US growth
VGG for US exposure
XEF (in a half position) for international exposure
VEE (in a half position) for emerging market exposure
Could you please suggest some more to round things out? I need another 5 or 6 stocks.
Also, do you have any objection to using ZAG and HYGH as bond substitutes for their conservative portfolio? I am buying individual preferred shares for that component.
Q: I'm looking for a new play in the materials/resource sector and SJ seems to be viewed positively both at 5i and others. However, I see it has traded sideways since mid-2015, and EPS dropped to 1.98 in 2018 from 2.42 a year earlier.
What is the reason for sideways trading and drop in EPS? Are they behind the company?
What are the short and long term catalysts for SJ?
I see its free cash flow is variable from year to year, what accounts for this?
I'm thinking of moving my position in MX to SJ.
Q: I currently hold nothing in the materials sector. What would your recommendation be for a 5% position in a balanced/income portfolio?
Many thanks,
Ellen
Q: I have received material from Methanex from the current management/Board as well as the dissident shareholders who wish to place 4 new Board members on the Board. What would you recommend to do in this case, vote with the current management/Board, or vote to replace some of the current Board with the 4 new nominees? I only have a small position in MX.
Q: I was wondering if you could recommend some stocks that trade on the tsx that pay dividends in US money. I believe pif does, could you name some others.
I sold both both position I had in those two company last August. I am considering buying back in. Love the management and dividend. Would you wait for a pul buy or get in half position now.
Q: I've read both letters to shareholders over this board fight and would appreciate your view and possible outcomes to shareholders. My first opinion is that this activist shareholder wants an immediate , short term return of capital, and that their 4 nominees are not qualified.
Q: It looks like Methanex was buying back shares consistently up to early December and not since. Do you think they will restart this in the near term or do you think they are preserving $ for their capex program? Thanks.
Q: It seems to be a serious dispute with M&G nominations of 4 directors and Methanex’s negtaive response to this. The share price is dropping. Would you still hold stock if you are under water already.
Thanks
Q: Looking at investing in these Canadian companies paying US $ dividends for a non registered account to help with my snowbird expenses.
Would be 15% of total stock/bond portfolio of mainly banks, utilities, reits, pipelines. Age 69.
Appreciate your opinion on these. Any others?
Would you equal weight or what individual % would you allocate? Any other thoughts?
Thanks. Derek
Q: I continue to try and learn by reading reports, analyst ratings etc. Tudor Pickering has recently released ratings for MX as a hold and price target of $59, currently at $79 and change, and TRP as a buy with a Price target of $62 currently $60.79. This does not make any sense to me. Why hold a stock they estimate will loose $20, and buy a stock that will gain only $1.21.
Please explain if possible, am i missing something?
Q: Good morning. I've been riding this loser CHE.UN for some time and have noted your previous comments on same. I think I should sell now and take my lumps. Where should I reinvest in this sector, with dividends and potential for growth. Thanks
Q: Is the news about the activist shareholder M&G a positive for the stock? What are you feelings about these companies that try to "unlock value" from stocks? eg. MX, GUD, etc. Is it about short-term vs. long term gains?
Q: My question revolves around Peter's webinar and the thought we should know when to sell our losers. I bought the above just before the decline last year. All outpaced (negatively)the market decline considerably. During the recent market rally 2 have not participated with the market, the others have basically market performed. Leaving the value at this point -23%. There have been some misses in the last reports for these companies. As an investor what am I looking for now to continue to hold these positions or be a seller.
Thank you,
Mike
