Q: I've noticed there is a divergence on many days between the performance of Canadian and American oil and gas stocks. Today, for example, many Canadian oil stocks are down. XEG is down .86% on the day. All the American O&G ETFs are up, most fairly strongly. What accounts for this?

Q: Could you please share your recommendations regarding my energy sector investments? I feel like I have too many and some may be overlapping. Additionally, could you suggest a few investments inside this sector that are currently not being covered?

Q: Is NDIV a reasonably good natural resources fund? Only 3 years old, has minimal AUM, and there is no Morningstar rating. Selects dividend paying natural resource companies globally. Could be attractive IF it’s managed by Kevin Simpson , who seems to be a great manager running covered call strategies. I cannot tell if NDIV follows such a strategy. Information on ETF data sites is scanty. Would appreciate very much your insight and comments including whether this ETF is a good diversifier. MER 0.59%.

Q: Good afternoon,

I currently hold XLE in my US Non Registered account and am considering taking profits now and adding an equivalent amount of XEG in my Cdn Non Registered account.

Notwithstanding the capital gin tax implications, do you think that the Canadian Energy sector offers better potential returns than the US Energy sector should Oil prices go to $90 and above and if so what would be your best idea in the Canadian Energy sector?

Q: I am thinking of starting a position in an energy company. names that have my attention are Devon with its high dividend. Exxon I mentioned on CNBC a lot. An ETF ? Can you make some suggestions. I am Canadian and realize US dividends are taxed at 15 %.

Q: Hi folks
Today Feb 6, XLE is $85.45 as I type. I believe i read in the Q and A that you mentioned that if XLE dropped below $85.00 that the sector is rolling over. Is this still the case? If so what would you suggest I do if anything? My weighting is 9.5%. I own ENB, SHEL, HES, TOU, TVE, PEY, SU, PXT with each at varying weights. (ENB being the highest at 3.35% and I realize also a Utility)

Q: Apparently, there are 11 major sectors in the S&P (Global Industry Classification Standard). Could you please list one ETF to best represent EACH major sector of the S&P? For example, would IUIT best represent the entire Info Tech sector of the S&P? It seems the SPDR funds are much more specific than the 11 GICS sectors:
Information Technology
Health Care
Financials
Consumer Discretionary
Communication Services
Industrials
Consumer Staples
Energy
Utilities
Real Estate
Materials

Q: Hi,

A great question by Rodney today (Jan 11) on Tech sector "rolling over" and comparing it to the current status in O&G sector. I really appreciated your measured and thoughtful response.

This is a quick follow up question to your answer to Rodney's question:

I "get" the 80$ markin XLE as an indicator to monitor. Makes sense.

But what other sectors would like XLE to be compared to? XMA or XLI or XGD.....not sure if you meant ALL the 11 sectors in S&P or some specific sectors that are comparable to O&G.

Following the sale of XLF in my US$ Non registered account for tax loss reasons, I'm considering the purchase of an Energy ETF.

Q1. Between XEG in Canada and XLE in the US, which do you prefer and which d you think has a better risk reward profile?

Q2. Assuming you prefer the Canadian market for the Energy sector, is there another Energy ETF in Canada that you would prefer to XEG?

Q: Hi, I am in the camp that fossil fuel industry will be a place to be in 2023. With that said do you feel it is better to be in a fund such as NNRG or XLE or to be in individual companies either CDN or US? If so, can you give a few with some good dividends that you would recommend to look at. Thanks

Q: Hi,
O&G sector is taking a beating!
Is this downtrend going to be sustained or short lived?
What is your prediction going forward for the O&G sector in general? For the medium term, say one year.
Add to one's position or shed some or stay the course?
The perma oil bulls like Eric Nuttal are saying stay positive! Others especially Technical Analysts seem to be ringing warning bells.
Curious to know where you stand.

Q: A 3 year chart shows HXE up 107% and XLE up 52%, both based upon the same index. Does XLE not include dividends? If HXE includes re-invested dividends, when is that increase included in the share price?

Q: Hi
If I want to have global exposure to Oil and Gas sector, NOT just Canadian or the US market, is IXC the only ETF option? Or should I buy XLE and add some other ETF which has exposure to Shell, Royal Dutch and other large European big oil cos? My search doesn't seem to yield anything that includes a nice balance between North America and European companies other than IXC. Any suggestions?

Your answers to others' questions seem to suggest that there is some more gain to be made in energy sector. (Paraphrasing here!) Hence this question. I already own XLE/XEG in different accounts.
