Q: What is your opinion on the issues at Parkland?

Q: I was going to ask if now would be a good time to take a small position in PKI anticipating price appreciation once the Boardroom issues are settled but given PKI is hitting new highs today it seems investors are not worried. Would you consider starting a small position in PKI now?

Q: My question relates to tax loss selling.
I sold two stocks prior to year end for a capital loss. However, the dividend payout after the sale date were automatically reinvested into the same two stocks. I called the discount broker a couple of days after this and had them sell the shares.
Do the reinvestment shares nullify the ability to claim the tax loss for the 2023 tax year?

Q: This is a reply to George's question about how to achieve an effective retirement withdrawal plan for your retirement portfolio. The "secret" is to invest in high quality dividend-paying stocks, resist the temptation to make trades, and aim to retire based on the age-based RRIF minimum withdrawal rates published by the CRA. I have been retired for 13 years and followed this strategy with success. My portfolio income in 2024 will be more than double what it was when I retired in 2010 because the % portfolio growth has outstripped the minimum % withdrawal rates. I always intended to write a book about my retirement planning experience, but never got around to it. Maybe I should reconsider, based on George's experience in finding few "how to" guides out there!

Taxes. If i buy a US stock with US dollars and sell it several years later. What happens. I know that i have to report the sale in Canadian dollars. But, i imagine that i will have to calculate the exchange rates on those two dates, no? It seems odd, since it was both bought and sold in US dollars.

Q: Down again on heavy volume. Do you have the means to see if these are borrowed shares for a short attack.

Starbucks seems to have good growth, and cash flow, but negative shareholder equity like most of the tobacco companies. It also seems like they have a problem with CEO'S. Mr. Schultz has to be on call to return when needed. Presently he is retiring from the board. I notice that some members of 5i have shares. Good investment and growth expected? or will it be flat until it finds its bearings.
