Q: Peter and team, not sure how to word this but I’ll try. When one buys a bond at less than face value [say $92] when it comes it comes due at the $100 face value, correct? On my brokers website it has a yield for semi annual and annual returns. Let’s say that’s 5% and it comes due in 3 years. Does that 5% make up a combination of the eight dollar capital gain plus the interest paid while I own it. If not how is that 5% calculated. Feel free to pick an existing bond being sold at a discount in order to answer my question. Are there any specific bonds or bond sectors that stand out as investable? I assume I’m better off, if I want to buy a discount, to wait until the next BOC announcement regarding rates.
Thanks as always
Bryan

Q: Good afternoon my 5i friends. I had a long career in commercial real estate. I'm looking at the core office vacancies and sublets in the CBDs of many big cities, including Toronto and Montreal. The vacancies will drag on with downward pressure on rents and I'm wondering about the fine gang at Brookfield. Do they have inordinate exposure to office space and are they susceptible to rent compression. I am less concerned about retail and I know Brookfield has plenty but the worst is behind us, surely. So, your thoughts on the Brookfield office holdings, please.

kindest regards

Q: Hi, What is your assessment of Suncor after today's highly anticipated investor's day and stock selling off apparently triggered by company's decision to retain Petro Canada gas station, which has 18% market share of Canadian fuel distribution business. One of the reasons, company assigned was the safety net/cushion this business provides during the times of company facing headwinds of lower demand for oil. Looks like, market was expecting a decision otherwise. which would have helped rerating of shares and narrow the discount, stock trades at, relative to its peers. How would company fund its purchase of Fort Hill Oil sands, from Tech Resources, due to close in 2023 ? How does this all play with activist investor and overall impact on stock price ? Thank You

Q: Just reading the ETF/mutual fund newsletter, and the changes to the growth portfolio. I am wondering where I can find longer term returns for the 3 ETF portfolios? Only the 3 month and YTD returns are displayed in the charts, whereas most investors would need longer term info before taking the plunge.
Thanks. Peter

Q: Is there anything of note in the 3rd Quarter release? The technology of QST and the world wide focus on reducing methane gases, one would think this company is in a sweet spot to increase sales dramatically - as per this statement from the president (below)... so help me understand why they are not signing oodles of contracts for their clean combustion technology solutions?
"Requests for proposals have increased significantly from both international and domestic companies, who are exploring opportunities to use Questor’s integrated solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, eliminate flaring and venting to meet the new regulations focused on methane."
