Q: Good morning with the increased sabre rattling from the Trump administration against China my mind goes to what if we end up in a trade standoff. Just looking at North American stock sectors which will be effected the most and which offer the best protection if the dog pooh should hit the trade fan?

Q: From other answers to members' questions it seems you feel PPL is a strong Canadian company. Just want to make sure before I take an initial position, keeping the current situation regarding oil in the world in mind, that it's dividend looks safe and it's debt level is manageable. Also, do you think there is a reasonable chance for capital gains in the short and long term? Thanks again for your guidance.

Q: Hi,
I'm trying to create a well balanced bond fund for that portion of my portfolio and have come up with this: HFR-T, CBO-T, CLF-T, TLT, XBB-T, CVD-T, SHY, FLOT, IVOL, BNDX, VSG-T
I guess I should have something that will generate monthly income as well? If I am overdoing this, please let me know...it seems like a lot of holdings. Is there a better way? A mutual fund?

Q: I own the following and thought: WCP ( good assets good balance sheet),
CJ ( slow decline rates), VET ( Brent prices) And they were all paying great dividends ! What could go wrong eh?
The model of great dividends in this sector is broken and not to return.
These stocks represent a small part of my portfolio.
Believing that the market will do its work eventually , I am looking at selling these and replacing with PXT which is one of your favourites in this sector. Would you expect it to bounce back to the same degree as the others or more / less?
Emotionally it is very difficult to sell your losers, always hoping they will come back, but have found once I sell them, they are not daily reminders of the money I have lost.
PXT has a strong balance sheet, good assets and management. Is their oil sold and refined within the region? Would you buy in RRSP,TFSA or CASH account.? Thanks. Derek

Q: I have a question about data centers. Can you identify some possible investment opportunities in this space?
While the largest tech companies (Google etc) seem to be building their own data centres, it seems everyone else will need to rely on 3rd party data centres to hold the massive amounts of data we/they will be using.
Can you suggest some individual companies that are interesting to you and if there are any reasonable ETFs that focus on this space / have significant holdings in this space?

Q: I have both these 2 ETF in a RRSP account but at a 3 % weight each.these 2 ETF. I will not need to start withdrawing for 10 years and wondered if I were to buy more for a 5% weight , buying 1 % now and then another 1% in a few month or best to wait longer to see if these 2 ETF start to perform better?

Q: Hi team
I have about 40,000 in US dollars to invest
aim is to put 30% in US equity (SPY which I have a current position)
and put 70% to generate dividends and some growth (VIG which I have a current position)

it is going to be in a non-registered account, so I know that tax withholding taxes
is going to lessen the return (no intention of filing a US return)
can you give me 2 Cdn ETF (investing in US div stocks and
general market) equivalent to VIG and SPY ?
of similar returns and risks

Q: I read with interest your "Stock Screener" list detailing shareholder yield. I have been unable to find any free screeners that give this yield number (tried Yahoo, Globe, TSX, and RBC which is my direct investing site. Please offer your considerations for companies (stocks preferred over ETFs)...2 or 3 in US and the same for Canada.

Q: I am 68 year old married male. We are not pinched for money. I have been involved with the stock market and we doing OK due in part to 5i’s influences. Thank you. I / we have never borrowed money from the broker to buy any stock. I am thinking of buying either AEM or KL. One option would be to sell SYZ which we have held for years and is our smallest Tech position. Sort of hate to give up the dividend. Another option would be to sell some of our CSU which we have also held for years and is our largest weighting. Sort of hate to sell CSU because it is such a good company and the weighting increase (while always high) is partly due to the decline in other sectors. I am wondering if you think if going on margin should be considered or is it just too risky? Are there rules on what triggers a margin call? Does it happen when the purchased company declines or is the call triggered when the collateral stocks decline? We have accumulated lots of capital losses over the years to offset any capital gains coming from the sale of either SYZ or CSU.

Q: My question is a general one on dividends. For example during these times companies are keeping the dividend and in some cases raising it. But most are stopping the DRIP. What is the purpose of this? Only reason I could think of is they don't want to give me stock at such cheap prices? What else am I missing?
