Q: Hello the 5i team!
I appreciate your insight into the different aspects of the investment world.
My children (26 and 23) have received a generous inheritance from their grandfather.
They might in the short term want to use a portion of their inheritance for a down payment on a house. My 23 year old cannot really touch his portion until he is 25. Their TFSA will be maxed.
I did buy some PHM and some MST.UN (with his agreement) for my 23 year old. I am trying to hold his hand on PHM as he has lost half of his investment.
My 26 year old has a substantial amount of BCE, they both hold RY, CGX, MST.UN, PSK, PMO005, MFC4143 and RBF448. I was thinking of selling the mutual funds as their MERs are 1.97% and 1.2%.
What would be your recommendations for the short term portion (let say 2 year time frame) and the longer term portion of their investment ?
Thanks.
Elaine

Q: Hi Peter and Team,

Can you comment on the Direxion shares 3x leveraged ETFs? The ones I'm specifically looking at are DUST, NUGT, and CURE. I understand they're high risk (especially DUST and NUGT) and swing pretty drastically in both directions. Would you view DUST as being a good, but aggressive, hedge against the general economy? CURE also looks interesting as a bet that the healthcare sector will continue to do well.

Thanks,
Jordan

Q: Hi,
I currently own V, but I am considering a switch to AXP.
The primary motivation is valuation. The larger yield is also attractive.
Do you have an opinion on Visa vs American Express?
Thank you.

Q: MAL dropped over 9% today after the Q2 results were released. I guess the $0.28 per share profit fell a little short of the estimate. Is this a bit of an overreaction as the quarter did not seem too bad to me.

Q: As a result of Northern Properties (NPR.UN)recent expansion and diversification of properties, I am tempted to switch my CAR.UN to NPR.UN for the higher yield. Would you consider this a reasonable exchange. Do you think these two REITS are of equal quality and potential? Thank you for your comments.

Q: Just wanted to follow up on Linamar given the continued sell off. Its now trading around $66 and seems like a good entry point to pick up a half position with another half below $60 if the sell off continues. I realize its a cyclical industry, but it had sold off much more than Magna. Do you prefer one over the other or both good and depends on valuation?

Thanks,
Jason

Q: Good Morning,

I the backdrop of these market conditions and today's pull back, where would you put 25K without consideration to other holdings and moderate risk tolerance.

Thanks,

Q: Good Morning 5I,

I have been a holder of LNR for almost 2 years now. Last fall there was a big drop dew to market adjustment. For the last 2 to 3 weeks it has been going down by a big chunks at a time with no news other than analysis reviews. Certainly somebody knows something that is not out in the market yet. Can you explain to me how people can find out news before it comes out to the public and why the company does not spell it out sooner?
This is frustrating the similar happen to MacDonald Dettwiler in the last month or so and the reason was the order book is getting smaller. But for LNR this does not seem to be the case.

Q: Metro just announced its quarterly results. Everything is up: net income, same store sales, EPS, etc. Metro has raised their dividend each year for more than 10 consecutive years. In 2010 it was 22 cents and is now 47 cents per share - an increase of 113%. The ROE is consistently above 15%. It is buying back shares at a rapid rate - possible financial engineering because total revenues have not increase in past few years. All the metrics are what I look for in a stock (except for the lack of revenue increase) - high ROE, increasing dividends and EPS, share buybacks.

But MRU is in the food retail business. With fierce competition from Empire, Loblaws, Wal-Mart and Costco this stock scares me despite the numbers. Should I be scared or can I pull the trigger and buy it?

Q: Good Morning Peter,
For some time now I have been wanting to replace Artis Reit AX.Un. I want to replace it with PBH or a similar company in the food business. With global warming and food shortages looming would this be a good choice? Although the dividend is lower, on the long run do you think a change would be merited. Thank you for your help.
